PREFACE.

THE following Lessons were written for a Church Sunday School-not with the intention of reading them to the children, but by way of preparation for their instruction; and it is hoped they may prove useful to some younger teachers who are engaged in the same pleasant work.

In revising them for publication many alterations and additions have been made, to render them suitable for reading by children of superior education, as well as by the class to whom they were originally addressed.

DOCTRINE AND DUTY.

I.

"But man dieth, and wasteth away; yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?" JOB, xiv. 10.

You know, my dear children, that we cannot live in this world always. You often hear of people dying, and many of you have seen some of your own relations and friends carried to the grave.

Some day it will be your turn. God only knows how soon there may be but a step between you and death.

But one thing is certain; that sooner or later, you must leave this world; for "it is appointed unto men once to die." Heb. vii. 27.

Did you ever think seriously of this?

We are all too apt to put away the thoughts of death, and to forget that we must suffer it ourselves. But so surely as we now live and breathe, we shall have to die.

It is astonishing that people, who know this solemn truth so well, should think of it so little.
