PREFACE

The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published annually since 1878, is the standard summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. It is designed to serve as a convenient volume for statistical reference and as a guide to other statistical publications and sources. The latter function is served by the introductory text to each section, the source notes appearing below each table, the Guide to Sources, the section on Publications of Recent Censuses, and the Guide to State Statistical Abstracts.

This volume includes a selection of data from many statistical publications, both governmental and private. Publications cited as sources usually contain additional statistical detail and more comprehensive discussions of definitions and concepts than can be presented here. Data not available in publications issued by the contributing agency but obtained from the agency's unpublished tabulations and records are identified in the source notes as "unpublished data." More information on the subjects covered in tables so noted may generally be obtained from the source.

Except as otherwise indicated, figures are for the United States as presently constituted. Although emphasis in the Statistical Abstract is given primarily to national data, many tables present data for regions and individual States. Statistics for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and for outlying areas of the United States are included in the State tables whenever available and are supplemented by information in section 31. Statistics for cities or other relatively small geographic units appear only in a few instances. Additional information for cities, counties, metropolitan areas, congressional districts, and other small units, as well as more historical data, are available in various supplements to the Abstract. (See page v.)

Changes in the 1973 edition.—This edition, the 94th annual issue, presents data for the most recent year or period available during the early part of 1973.

Each year the more than 1,300 tables and charts are reviewed and evaluated. New tables and charts of current interest are added, continuing series are brought up to date, and less timely data are curtailed or eliminated. Text notes are revised as necessary to incorporate new definitions and source references.

A new feature introduced in this edition is a 14-page section of "Statistics for Federal Administrative Regions and States" which presents a broad and varied selection of social and economic data for the ten new standard Federal regions and their component States as designated by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. The new section, combined with section 34, "Metropolitan Area Statistics" is also available separately in a special reprint, Statistics for Federal Regions, States, and Metropolitan Areas, which can be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D.C. 20402. The price per copy is 85 cents; a 25 percent discount is allowed on orders of 100 copies or more sent to the same address. Copies can also be purchased at any U.S. Department of Commerce Field Office located in certain large cities.

USA Statistics in Brief, a loose, pocket-size insert, included for the first time in 1972, has been updated and is also available in separate reprint form for 25 cents per copy at the above addresses.

In keeping with heightened current interest in energy and fuels, new data are presented showing energy consumption indicators, projections of energy output to the year 2000 by consuming sector and energy source, and fuel consumption by type of use. Related subjects are represented by new tables on the black lung benefit program and on the population in Appalachia below the low income level.

Among other new materials introduced are 6 tables showing data for farms and farm income, the former relating to types of commercial farms and agricultural services, the latter to personal income of the farm population, farm income from sales, and gov. ernment payments to farms. New measures of military affairs include tables on arms exports and imports by countries and a summary of U.S. assistance to Indochina. Changing social conditions are reflected in new tables on living arrangements of widowed persons, unwanted fertility, duration of marriages, and suicide rates by race.

Altogether there are 64 entirely new tables in this edition, scattered through 24 sections. In addition to the new tables mentioned above, following are some of the other subjects covered by new tables:

State centers of population, p. 10

Persons wearing corrective lenses, p. 83
Private schools, by affiliation, p. 124
Homicides in selected countries, p. 149
Delinquents in training schools and
detention homes, p. 162

Per capita water use, p. 175
Water pollution index, p. 178
Municipal parks, p. 206

Job openings and placements, p. 248
Median income in constant dollars, p. 329

Working mothers below low income level, p. 340

GNP implicit price deflators, p. 348 Income tax returns of 65-year-olds and over, p. 398

Business inventories in constant dollars, p. 477

Traffic accidents, p. 552

Finances of manufacturing corporations, p. 702

Trends on foreign exchange rates, p. 831

In addition, many of the sections have undergone fairly extensive tabular rearrange. ment and format changes designed to improve the organization of subject matter.

Of the tables included in the 1972 edition, 54 were omitted from this issue. The omissions represent primarily tables for which comparable details appear in the new or retained tables or for which no recent data are available.

Responsibility.-The contents of this volume were taken from a large number of sources. The Bureau of the Census cannot accept the responsibility for the accuracy or limitations of the data presented here, other than for those which it collects. The responsibility for selection of the material and for proper presentation, however, rests with the Bureau.

SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Many persons have offered suggestions for improving the presentation of data in the Statistical Abstract and its supplements. Their comments have been most helpful. Users of these publications are urged to continue to make their needs known for consideration in planning future editions. Suggestions and comments should be sent to the Director, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C. 20233.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON DATA PRESENTED

Please consult the source publications available in local libraries or write to the agencies indicated in the source notes to the tables covering the desired subject. Write to the Bureau of the Census only if it is cited as the source.
