PREFACE

The purpose of this report is to bring together data to show characteristics of the farm operator families, their housing, and other items including amounts and sources of family income by farm characteristics particularly economic class of farm and net cash income of farm families. The data on which this report is based were obtained by matching records for the 1950 Censuses of Agriculture and Population for approximately 11,000 farms and farm operators. The report has been prepared cooperatively by the Bureau of the Census, U. S. Department of Commerce, and the Bureau of Human Nutrition and Home Economics and the Bureau of Agricultural Economics of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

The tabulations and compilation of the data were performed largely by the Bureau of the Census. Carl R. Nyman, Clinton F. Wells, John C. Volentine, Samuel S. Murray, Orville M. Slye, and J. Thomas Breen of the Agriculture Division, Bureau of the Census, reviewed the tabulations on which the report was based. The analysis presented in the Chapters 2 to 5 of this report were prepared by the following personnel:
