Percentage increases are computed on basis of change in population since preceding census date, and period covered therefore is not always exactly 10 years. Adjustments for differences in census date must be made if strictly comparable figures are desired for each decade.

Figures given for various census years represent the area of all land within the present boundaries of continental United States which was under the jurisdiction of the United States on the date in question, including in some cases considerable areas of land not then organized or settled and not covered by the census.

Revised figure of 39,818,449 for the 1870 population includes adjustments for underenumeration in the Southern States. Unadjusted data are used in this and subsequent tables because revised figures for States, urban-rural residence, etc., are not available. On the basis of the revised figure the population increased by 8,375,128, or 26.6 percent, between 1860
