THE VINEYARD.

and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the tax-gatherers and the harlots believed him: but ye, when ye had seen, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

THE PARABLE OF THE VINEYARD LET OUT TO HUSBANDMEN. Matt. xxi., 33-43.

son.

33HEAR another parable: There was a man, a householder, who planted a vineyard, and made a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. 34 And when the season of fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive the fruits of it. 35 And the husbandmen having taken his servants, they scourged one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did to them in like manner. 37 But last of all he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my 38 But the husbandmen having seen the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and seize his inheritance. 39 And having taken him, they cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. 40 When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen? 41They say to him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out the vineyard to other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons. 42Jesus saith to them, Have ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, this became the head of the corner: this was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes? 43On this account I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits of it.

Mark xii., 1-11.

1AND he began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and placed a fence about it, and dug the cellar under the wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. 2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen

of the fruits of the vineyard. 3And having taken him, they beat and sent him away empty. And again he sent to them another servant; and him they wounded in the head and shamefully treated. 5And he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. 6He had yet one beloved son; he sent him last to them, saying, They will reverence my son. 7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. 8And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. 9 What then shall the lord of the vineyard do? he shall come and destroy the husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. 10Have ye not read this scripture The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become for a head of a corner. ilThis was from the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

THE PARABLE OF THE WEDDING GARMENT. Matt. xxii.,1-14. In the Temple. 1AND Jesus answering, spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man—a king, who made wedding feasts for his son. 3 And sent forth his servants to call those who were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. 4 Again, he sent other servants, saying, Tell those who are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and the fatlings are killed, and all things are ready come to the wedding. 5But they making light of it, went away, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: 6And the rest having seized his servants, insulted and slew them. 7But the king was enraged: and having sent his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. 8Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they who were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore to the outlets of the roads, and as many as ye find, bid to the wedding. 10And those servants having gone into the roads gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the bridal chamber was furnished with guests. 11 And the king coming in to see the guests, saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment: 12And he

saith to him, Friend, how camest thou in here, not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13Then said the king to the servants, Having bound his feet and hands, cast him into the darkness that is outside; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few chosen.

THE PAYMENT OF TRIBUTE TO THE ROMAN EMPEROR. Matt. xxii., 15-22.

15THEN the Pharisees went, and took counsel how they might entangle him in discourse. 16 And they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any one : for thou lookest not to the face of men: 17Tell us then, What thinkest thou ? Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not? 18But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites ? 19Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they brought to him a denarius.* 20 And Jesus saith to them, Whose is this image and superscription? 21They say, Cæsar's. Then saith he to them, Render therefore to Cæsar the things of Cæsar, and to God the things of God. 22And having heard, they marvelled, and having left him they went away.

THE REPLY OF JESUS TO THE SADducees.
34-40.

34 AND Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage: 35 But they who have been accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 For neither can they die any more for they are equal to the angels: and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses testified at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38But he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him. 39Then certain of the scribes answering, said, Teacher, thou hast well said.

THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS.

79

JESUS DECLARES THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS. Matt. xxii., 34-40. In the Temple.

34 BUT the Pharisees having heard that he had silenced the Sadducees were gathered to the same place, 35 And one of them, a teacher of the law, tempting him, asked, 36Teacher, which commandment in the law is great? 37 And he said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39The second is like to it. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments depend the whole law and the prophets.

Mark xii., 28-34.

28 AND one of the scribes having come who heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? 29Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. 31 The second is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is not any other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribe said to him, Well, Teacher, thou hast said the truth: that he is one; and there is not another besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and the sacrifices. 34 And Jesus seeing that he answered wisely said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one after that dared to question him.

WHOSE SON WAS THE CHRIST TO BE? Matt. xxii., 41-46.

In the Temple. 41 AND the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them 42Saying, What think ye about the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him; the son of David. 43 He saith to them, How then in spirit doth David call him Lord, saying, 44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I put thine enemies under

thy feet. 45If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor any one from that day dared to question him any

more.

Luke xx., 41-44.

41 AND he said to them, How say they that Christ is the son of David? 42For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, 43Till 1 make thine enemies thy footstool? 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son ?

A CAUTION ABOUT THE SCRIBES.

Luke xx., 45-47.

In the Temple. 45 AND in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples. 46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the markets, and the first seats in the synagogues, and the chief places at feasts; 47 Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: they shall receive greater condemnation.

Mark xii., 41-44.

THE WIDOW'S MITE.

In the Temple. 41 AND sitting opposite the treasury, he beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury: and many who were rich cast in much. 42 And there came one poor widow, and she threw in two lepta,* which make a kodrantes.† 43 And having called his disciples, he said to them, Verily I say to you, That this poor widow hath cast more in than all they who are casting into the treasury: 44For all they cast in of their abundance; but she of her poverty cast in all that she had, even all her living.
