GEORGE DYER, with whofe poetical talents the public are well acquainted, is preparing a courfe of publications-fatires, odes, and elegies; two of which will thortly make their appearance, under the titles of Poet's Fate and Poetic Sympathies. A new periodical work is announced, entitled ORIENTAL COLLECTIONS; which is to confift of translations, mifcellaneous effays, and differtations, relative' to the languages, geography, natural hiftory, mythology, biography, chronology, arts, fciences, and literature in general of Afia. It is to be decorated and illuftrated by plates, maps, views, and fac-fimiles of letters, &c. Four numbers, on wove paper, are to be published annually, at a fubfcription of two guineas; the first to appear in January, 1797. MAJOR OUSELEY is the perfon to whom letters and communications are to be addreffed, at Mr. R. WHITE's, bookfeller, Piccadilly. Mr. HOLCROFT has juft completed a tranflation of the Travels of COUNT STOLBERG through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Sicily. It will be published in the courfe of the winter, in two volumes quarto, decorated with nineteen large and beautiful plates. The works of A. R. MENGS, first painter to Charles the Third, of Spain, have been tranflated from the Italian, and will fhortly make their appearance in the English language. Mr. BOSCAWEN has in the prefs the fecond fecond volume of his New Tranflation of Horace into English Verfe. This fecond volume will contain the Satires, Epifiles, and Art of Petry. A tranflation of WIELAND's popular work, the private Hiftory of Peregrinus Proteus, is nearly ready for publication. Mr. THELWALL is expected to pubih, in a few days, a copious reply to Mr. Burke's late pamphlets on a Regicide Peace. REVIEW OF NEW MUSICAL PUBLICATIONS. A Divertimento for the piano-forte, with Accompaniments for a flute, violin, and violoncello, by Mr. L. Von Ejih. Op. 14. 35. F. Linley. This divertimento opens with a Marche Religieuf, fucceeded by an air, in common ture, which is again relieved by a movement, Tempo de Allemand. E 6. major, is its standard key; but digreffions into its 4th A 6, and its relative minor C, are given, with peculiar good effect; and contribute, together with other unequivocal works of fcientific qualification, to prove the authors profeffional abilities. The merit of the piece runs in that uniform even tenor, that, to give it a general good character, ather than to enter into any particular criticifm. appears to us the better mode for its review, and, therefore. we content curfelves with pronouncing it a refpectable compofition, and recommend it as an agreeable and improving exercite for the piano-forte practitioner. William's Return, a favourite Sea Song, by T. Ambrofe, 15. Riley. Mr. Ambrofe, whofe capability in little efforts like the prefent, we have frequently admired, has, in this inftance, if we may ufe the expreffion, ftruck off an air, agreeable in itself, and well adapted to the words it is meant to exprefs. Some trivial defects, however, we find ourselves obliged to notice: fuch as the first bur moving wholly in the fourth of the key, and the opportunity that has been omitted to be taken of modulating, after the fixth bar, into the fifth of the key, which would have added to the variety and fpirit of the compofi tion. The Mariner, a celebrated Sea Song, written and compofed by John Moulds, and fung by Mr. Denum, with the greatest applaufe, at the Theatre Royal, Drury-lane, Is. Cull ford. The melody of this little production is, for the moft part, fmeeth and natural, and fome few of its paffages happily expreffive; particularly that applied to the line, "Thus mournful fighed in deep diftrefs." The faults are, that the words in fome places are badly accented, and that the bafs is not throughout well chofen. The Lover's Rhapfody, compofed by Mr. Battifhill. The words by the late Aaron Hill, efq. Price Is. Hanifon and Co. It was with much pleafure that we perufed this beautiful little ballad. The melody is rich, and the fentiment of the poetry elegantly and faithfully conveyed. Mr. Battiihill's profeilional reputation, fo long and fo well earned, naturally attaches much expectation to whatever he that the prefent compofition is qualified produces, yet it is barely juftice to fay, to fatisfy the moft fanguine idea of the real connoiffeur. Three Sonatas for the Piano-Forte or Harpfichord, with an Accompaniment for a flute or violin; compo:ed, and refpectfully dedicated to Mifs Barrett, by W. Howard, 75. 6d. Fentum. We had much pleasure in the perusal of these fonatas. Genius and tafte form their general and predominant features, and exhibit Mr. Howard as a very promifing compofer.
