JESUS TEACHING IN THE TEMPLE.

He

children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40But now ye seek to kill me, a man who hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the works of your father. They said to him, We were not born of fornication: we have one father, even God. 42Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, ye would love me; for I proceeded forth and am come from God; for neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? because ye are not able to listen to my word. 44 Ye are of the father the devil, and the desires of your father ye are willing to do. was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh the lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 But because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46Who of you convicteth me of sin ? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He who is of God heareth the words of God: On this account ye hear not, because ye are not of God. 48The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon? 49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me. 50 And I seek not my glory: there is one who seeketh and judgeth. 51Verily, verily, I say to you, If any one shall keep my word he shall never see death. 52The Jews said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou savest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste of death. 53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets who died whom makest thou thyself? 54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifieth me; of whom ye say that He is our God: 55And ye have not known him; but I know him. And if I should say, I know him not, I should be a liar, like to you: but I know him and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he might see my day; and he saw it, and was glad. 57Therefore said the Jews to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham was born, I am.

HEALING A BLIND MAN ON THE SABBATH. 39

THE MAN BORN BLIND HEALED ON THE SABBATH. John ix., 1-12.

Jerusalem.

1AND passing by, he saw a man blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God may be manifested in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent us, while it is day; night cometh, when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6Having said these words, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay, 7And said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is, interpreted, Sent.) Then he went and washed, and came seeing, 8The neighbours therefore, and they who before had seen him as a beggar, said, Is not this he who sat and begged? 9Some said, This is he: others said, No, but he is like him, He himself said, I am he. 10Therefore said they to him, How then were thine eyes opened? He answered, The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam, and wash: then having gone and washed, I received sight. 12And they said to him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.

THE MAN WHO WAS HEALED CAST OUT.

John, ix., 35-41.

35JESUS heard that they had cast him out; and having found him, said, Dost thou believe on the Son of man? 36 He answered and said, Lord, and who is he, that I might believe on him? 37 Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he who talketh with thee. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe: and he did homage to him. 39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they who see not might see; and that they who see may become blind. 40Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to

him, Are we blind also? 41Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see. Your sin remaineth.

John X., 1-39. SUBSEQUENT DISCOURSES.

1VERILY, verily, I say to you, He who entereth not through the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2But he who entereth in through the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4When he hath put forth all his own, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him for they know his voice: 5But a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6This parable spoke Jesus to them but they understood not what things they were which he spoke to them. 7Then said Jesus, Verily, verily, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All whoever came are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9I am the door: through me if any one enter he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10The thief cometh not, except that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. 11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep. 12The hireling also not being a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth and the wolf catcheth and scattereth them: 13 Because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep. 141 am the good shepherd, and know mine, and mine know me, 15Even as the Father knoweth me, I also know the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: those also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice: and there shall be one flock, one shepherd. 17On this account the Father loveth me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. 18No one taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it again; this command have I received of my Father. 19There was

a schism again among the Jews through these words. 20Then many of them said, He hath a demon, and is mad; why hear ye him? 21Others said, These are not the words of a demoniac. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? 22 And it was the feast of Dedication in Jerusalem; it was winter; 23 And Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon's porch. 24Then came the Jews round about him and said to him, How long dost thou keep us in suspense? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25Jesus answered, I told you, and ye believe not the works that I do in the name of my Father, they bear witness of me. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall pluck them out of my hand. 29The Father who gave them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to pluck them out of the Father's hand. 301 and the Father are one. 31The Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from the Father; for which work of these do ye stone me? 33The Jews answered him, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law I said, Ye are gods? 35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be made void; 36Say ye to him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not: 38But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works; that ye may know, and understand, that the Father is in me, and I in the Father. 39Therefore they sought to take him: and he escaped out of their hand.

THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF LAZARUS. John xi., 1-44.

Bethany.

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2(And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus

was sick.) 3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 4Jesus having heard it, said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby. 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When therefore he had heard that he was sick, then indeed he remained two days in the place in which he was. 7Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go again into Judæa. 8The disciples say to him, Rabbi, the Jews of late were seeking to stone thee; and goest thou there again? 9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: 10but if any one walk in the night he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. These things said he and after this he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus hath fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him. 12Then said the disciples to him, Lord, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be restored. 18But Jesus had spoken about his death: and they thought that he speaketh of taking the repose of sleep. 14Then said Jesus therefore to them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad on your account that I was not there, that ye may believe; but let us go to him. 16Then said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17Then Jesus having come found that he had been four days in the tomb. 18Now Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia* off. 19And many of the Jews had come to those about Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother. 20Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met him but Mary sat in the house. 21Then said Martha to Jesus. Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 22Even now I know, that whatever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 23 Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again. 24 Martha saith to him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he who be
