for him hath God the Father sealed. 28Then said they to him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God? 29Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye should believe on him whom he hath sent. 30Then they said to him, What sign doest thou that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? 31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not the bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. 34Then said they to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 35 And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life he who cometh to me shall never hunger; and he who believeth on me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you, that ye have even seen and believe not. 37 All which the Father giveth me will come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out, 38 Because I come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who hath sent me, that everything he hath given me I should lose nothing of it, but should raise it up in the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life and I will raise him up in the last day. 41Then the Jews murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. 42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How doth he now say, I came down from heaven? 43Then Jesus answered them and said, Murmur not among_yourselves. 44 No one can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me should draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore who hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me. 46 Not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen God. 47 Verily, verily, I say to you, He who believeth hath everlasting life. 48I am the

p21 bread of life. 49Your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and died: 50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that any one may eat of it, and not die. 51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any one eat of my bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52The Jews then contended among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is truly food, and my blood is truly drink. 56 He who eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live through the Father; so he who eateth me, even he shall live through me. 58This is the bread which came down from heaven, not as the fathers did eat, and died: he who eateth this bread shall live for ever. Doth this offend you? 62If then ye shall see the Son of man ascend where he was before? 63It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who he was that should betray him. 65 And he said on this account said I to you, that no one can come to me, except it were given to him of the Father. 66 From this time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of eternal life. 69 And we believe and are sure that thou art the holy one of God. 70 He answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon of Kerioth; for he it was who was about to betray him, being one of the twelve.

UT he answering said to them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God through your tradition? 4For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and thy mother, and he who revileth father or mother, let him end by death. 5 But ye say, Whoever may say to his father or his mother, It is an offering to God, whatever of mine might be profitable to thee; he shall not honour his father and mother. 6And ye have made the law of God of none effect through your tradition. 7Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying, This people honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines commandments of men. 10 And having called the multitude, he said to them, Hear, and understand: 11What entereth into the mouth defileth not the man, but what cometh out of the mouth this defileth the man.

12THEN his disciples having come up, say to him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees having heard the word were offended? 13 But he, answering, said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 11Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind: And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into a ditch. 15 But Peter answering said to him, Explain to us this parable. 16And he said, Are ye also still without understanding? 17 Do ye not understand, that every thing entering into the mouth goeth into the stomach and is cast out into the draught. 18 But the things proceeding out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and these defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies 20These are the things defiling the man: but to eat with unwashed hands defileth not the man.

Do ye not perceive that whatever entereth the man from without cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the stomach, and goeth out into the draught, clearing away all the meats? 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, 22 Adulteries, overreachings, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

THE DAUGHTER OF A SYRO-PHOENICIAN WOMAN. Matt. xv., 21-28.

21 AND Jesus going from thence, withdrew to the parts of Tyre and Sidon. 22And, behold, a woman of Canaan coming from those borders cried to him, saying, Pity me, O Lord, son of David; my daughter is grievously possessed by a demon. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples having come, besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answering said, I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25Then she came and did homage to him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But he answering said, It is not good to take the bread of the children and to cast it to the dogs. 27 And she said, Yes, Lord for even the dogs eat of the crumbs_that fall from the table of their masters. 28Then Jesus answering said to her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it to thee as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

24 AND on rising he went from thence to the borders of Tyre. And entering into a house he wished that no one should know it; but he could not be unknown. 25 But immediately a woman heard of him whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, and came and fell at his feet 26But the woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by birth; and she besought him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs. 28 And she answered and saith to him, Yes, Lord: even the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. 29 And he said to her, For this saying go away; the demon has gone out of thy daughter. 30And having gone away to her house, she found the child laid on the bed and the demon gone out.
