Edward Spear Atkinson, Attorney-at-Law, born September 1, 1845; married Annette Russell, of Refugio County, Texas, February 15, 1877. She born April 21, 1855. Edward S. Atkinson was in the Civil War, 1862, Volunteer Aide-de-camp to Brigadier-General William Sooy Smith, Army of the Tennesee. Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Adjutant and Captain, First Kentucky Infantry.

George Morrison Atkinson, born January 6, 1856; married Carrie, daughter of C. F. Hiers and Mary Hatcher, September 13, 1887. She born April 3, 1867. Three children: George Paxton, born October 18, 1889; Hugh Valleau, born February 6, 1894; Charles Harold, born November 7, 1898.

6. J. Castella Rathbone

Born October 10, 1818; married Elizabeth Van Derbeek, January 29, 1839. She born 1820; died, Kansas City, Mo., October 3, 1890. Ten children: Martha, Abraham, William Palmer, Eleanor, Juliette, Anna, Martha 2d, Francis Waite, John Castella, Jr., and John Peter.

J. Castella Rathbone, in the Civil War, was Colonel of the 11th West Virginia Regiment, and with General Kelly and others, at the head of his 1200 volunteers, received the earliest onslaughts of the Confederates, along the West Virginia frontiers. While thus engrossed, overpowered by superior numbers under General Jenkins, he was captured, early in September, 1862, and paroled.

William Palmer Rathbone, born 1844; married Eugenia Hopkins, of Virginia. Three children: Eliza, Susan, who married Fred Lenton; William Palmer. Eleanor Rathbone, born 1847; died 1849.

Francis Waite Rathbone, born January 12, 1856; married Areanna Jenkins Hannan, February 27, 1878. She born February 24, 1854. Three children: Stella Anna, born, Wirt County, W. Va., August 7, 1880; Rose Marie, born, Parkersburg, W. Va., September 28, 1882; Robert Cameron, born, Kansas City, Mo., August 30, 1884.

Francis Waite Rathbone, M.D., is Professor of Chemistry in the Kansas City College, and Professor of Therapeutics and Materia Medica in the Kansas Medical College.

John Castella Rathbone, Jr., born July 25, 1858; married Genie Chandler. Four children: Rhoda, Mary, Luella, and Edward.

John Peter Rathbone, born 1861; died in infancy.

7. John Valleau Rathbone

Born, New York City, January 4, 1821; married Anna Maria, daughter of John B. and Margaret Westervelt Doremus, of Arcola, N. J., in 1841. He died, Parkersburg, W. Va., January 11, 1897. She born September 10, 1823; died August 9, 1897. Eleven children: Martha, Doremus, Margaret Westervelt, Mary Atkinson, Francis Vinton, John Valleau, Jr., Peter Doremus, Sophia, Camden, Anna and Maria, twins.

John Valleau Rathbone, in 1843, came from Arcola, N. J., to Burning Springs, W. Va., and in 1861 settled at Parkersburg, where he became President of the National Bank, which position he held at the time of his death. He was interested in the development of the oil wells in his section of the state, and by marked integrity and ability he amassed great wealth. In 1896 he erected a monument in the Valleau Cemetery at Paramus, N. J., in memory of his ancestors.

Martha Rathbone, born May 3, 1842; married John P. Ramsey, of Bergen County, N. J. Three children: John Rathbone; Margaret, born 1864, married ; Annetta.

JOHN RATHBONE RAMSEY, born, Wyckoff, Bergen County, N. J., April 25, 1862; married Mary Evelyn Thompson, of Clarksburg, W. Va., January 26, 1898. She died very suddenly, April 27, 1898. He spent much of his early life-from 1872 to 1879 with his maternal grandfather, John V. Rathbone, in Parkersburg, W. Va., where he received a private school education. In 1879 he returned to New Jersey and entered the law office of the late George H. Coffey, of Hackensack. He subsequently continued his law studies with the firm of Campbell and De Baun, also of Hackensack, and was admitted to the New Jersey bar as an Attorney in 1883, and as a Counselor in February, 1887. For nearly twelve years following his admission he was actively and successfully engaged in the practice of law in Hackensack, displaying marked ability as a counselor and advocate, and gaining an extensive clientage. Mr. Ramsey has always been an active, ardent and consistent Republican, and for many years has been a power in the councils of his party. He was the Republican candidate for the office of County Clerk, of Bergen County, in 1890, but was defeated by a very small majority, although he ran ahead of the rest of the Republican ticket by several hundred votes. In November, 1895, he was again the Republican candidate for that office and was elected by a majority of 961, for a term of five years from November 18, 1895, being the first Republican ever elected County Clerk in the County of Bergen. He has discharged the duties of his office with marked ability and satisfaction, and has displayed the same energy which characterized his career at the bar.*

WILLIAM DOREMUS PADEN, born January 8, 1868; married Nina May Clemens, January 6, 1891. She born January 16, 1870. One child: Nina Elizabeth, born August 24, 1892.

MARGARET RATHBONE PADEN, born October 10, 1874; married, Parkersburg, W. Va., Robert Leonard Morrison, M.D., of Clarksburg, W. Va., February 14, 1901. Mary Atkinson Rathbone, born August 1, 1849; died July 28, 1850. Francis Vinton Rathbone, born July 18, 1851; married Mamie Jackson, 1873. He died September 26, 1883. She born, West Virginia, October 2, 1853. One

child: Monroe, born July 23, 1874.

John Valleau Rathbone, Jr., born October 29, 1853; married, Weston, O., Jeannette Bowie Falconer, December 29, 1875. She born on plantation, Greencroft, Prince George County, W. Va., June 29, 1858. Seven children: Annie Marie, born February 4, 1878, died June 8, 1878; John Valleau, born August 23, 1880, died August 26, 1880; Jeannette Falconer, born February 9, 1885; Marguerite Louise, born September 24, 1886; Doremus, born January 2, 1888, died April 27, 1888; Francis Vinton, born February 21, 1890; Juliette, born November 22, 1895.

Peter Doremus Rathbone, born July 6, 1856; married Sally Braidon. Two children: Edward Braidon and John Valleau.

Sophia Rathbone, born July 11, 1860; married James Monroe Jackson, Jr., June 5, 1883. He born March 19, 1855. Three children: Anna Rathbone, born April 28, 1885; John Vinton, born February 23, 1887, died April 23, 1892; Helen Seely, born May 23, 1891.

Camden Rathbone, born May 30, 1862; married Bernice Blackford. He died April 23, 1896. Two children: Elizabeth and Anna Bernice.

Anna and Maria Rathbone, twins, born December 13, 1864. Anna, died February 24, 1865. Maria, died February 28, 1865.

8. Samuel Brown Rathbone

Born, New York City, February 16, 1823; died August 28, 1905. Married first, Amanda F. Burrowes, of New Jersey. No children.

Married second, Mahala Jane Grant, of North Haven (Fox Island), Maine, at Rockland, Me., August 7, 1847. She born July 26, 1831; died October 20, 1882. Nine children: John Atkinson, Melvina Elnora, Mary Brown, Samuel Brown, Jr., Valleau, William Vinton Grant, Castella Francis, Annie Marie, and Van Allen Doremus.

Married third, Carrie Creele, July 30, 1883. She born December, 1865. Six children: Mamie Juliette, Harold Lansing, Guy Brown, Marguerite, Edward Clayton, and Martha Ming Valleau.

The following Biography, from a newspaper clipping, was sent for insertion here:

"Samuel Brown Rathbone, Sr. - Received his early education in the New Jersey schools. He first went to sea, in 1839, on the Packet Ship 'Oxford,' Black Ball Line, New York to Liverpool. In 1841 was appointed Midshipman by Presdt Van Buren, and ordered to report, March 3, 1841, for duty on line of Battleship 'North Carolina,' at New York City. In a few months he was transferred from here to the frigate 'Brandywine,' bound for the Mediterranean Sea Squadron.

After serving there a year he was transferred to the steam frigate 'Missouri' at Norfolk, Va., of the home squadron, and from her to the U. S. Sloop 'Decatur,' bound for the west coast of Africa, where he staid 22 months; this last cruise being for the suppression of the slave trade, and under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry."

"In the meantime Mr. Rathbone's parents had removed from New Jersey to Parkersburg, W. Va., and he came there to visit them. At the expiration of his leave of absence, he was ordered to the line of Battleship 'Ohio,' at Boston, and in about two months, to the Sloop of War 'Marion,' bound for the African coast. He resigned from this, and went into the merchant marine. While in the merchant service, he married Miss Mahala J. Grant, of Rockland, Maine, and they had nine children, one of whom, Sam'l B. Jr., is at present [1899] Sheriff of Wirt Co., W. Va." "Samuel B. Sr., remained in the merchant service until 1859, and then came to Burning Springs, W. Va., and engaged in the oil business, until the breaking out of the Civil War in 1861, when he volunteered to serve in Co. C. Ist W. Va. Cavalry, remaining there until the latter part of that year, when he returned to New Jersey with his family. In March 1862, he was appointed Master in the Naval Service, and attached to the Gun Boat 'Penguin,' of the East Gulf Squadron. In March 1863, on account of a serious disability he resigned. In 1872, Capt. Rathbone again returned to Wirt Co., and since then has been one of its most influential citizens, being engaged in the steam-boat, farming, and milling business at different times. In 1882, his wife died suddenly whilst visiting relatives at Portsmouth, Ohio, and in 1883 he married again."

Melvina Elnora Rathbone, born, Rockland, Me., October 4, 1855; married Edward Thomas Lee, April 13, 1875. He born March 4, 1849. Six children: Charles Rathbone, born January 26, 1876; Robert Edward, born February 16, 1878, married Ethel Dye, June 1, 1901; William Francis, born March 4, 1880, died May 22, 1882; John Samuel, born February 23, 1882; Mary Daisy, born February 16, 1885; Earle Thomas, born August 13, 1892.

Mary Brown Rathbone, born, Rockland, Me., September 30, 1857; married Charles Wesley Owens (Reverend), October 25, 1886. He born November 29, 1847. One child: William Oliver, born October 7, 1887.

Samuel Brown Rathbone, Jr., born, Burning Springs, W. Va., January 23, 1860; married Carrie Edmondson, May 30, 1881. She born January 7, 1865. Three children: Pansy, born April 5, 1882; William Paden, born January 24, 1884; Virginia, born January 28, 1886.
