Les prophètes avaient annoncé la venue du Messie, mais sans en déterminer l'époque; saint Jean, dont la naissance fut miraculeuse, se retira dans le désert pour y prêcher et y convertir les pécheurs en leur annonçant que le Messie se trouvait parmi eux. Son éloquence, quoique simple, était persuasive, parce qu'elle venait de Dieu.

Raphaël a représenté le précurseur de Jésus-Christ assis sur une roche près des bords du Jourdain: d'une main il indique la croix mystérieuse, qui est à la fois le signe caractéristique auquel on le reconnaît, et l'emblème où plutôt l'annonce du genre de mort de son divin maître; de l'autre il tient une banderole sur laquelle on lit seulement le dernier mot de cette phrase: Ecce agnus Dei.

Il serait difficile de trouver plus de perfection que n'en présente ce tableau. Raphaël a mis dans la tête de saint Jean une expression admirable; son corps est d'une beauté parfaite, le dessin en est très correct, et la couleur en est vigoureuse et vraie, quoique les ombres cependant soient un peu trop noires et d'un vert un peu outré.

Bervic a fait de ce tableau une petite gravure fort recherchée.

SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST.

The prophets having announced the coming of the Messiah, but without fixing the epoch, St John, of miraculous birth, retired into the wilderness to preach and to convert the sinners there, by announcing that the Messiah would shortly appear amongst them. His eloquence, though simple, was persuasive, for it proceeded from God.

Raphael has represented the precursor of Jesus Christ seated upon a rock by the river Jordan; with one hand he shews the mysterious cross, which is equally the characteristic sign of his mission, and the emblem or rather foretoken of the kind of death his divine master is to suffer; in the other hand he holds a bandrol on which is deciphered the last word only of this phrase: Ecce agnus Dei. It would be difficult to find a higher degree of perfection than this picture presents. Raphael has thrown an admirable expression into the head of St John; his body is of the most beautiful symmetry, the delineation is very correct, and the colouring vigourous and true, although the shading is somewhat too deep and of rather too dark a green.
