JESUS EXAMINED

again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34Jesus answered, Sayest thou this from thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the high priest have delivered thee to me: what hast thou done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37 Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born and for this came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and saith to them, I find no crime in him. 39 But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the king of the Jews? 40Then cried they again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Matt. xxvi., 57-75.

57 AND they who had seized Jesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But Peter followed him afar off to the court of the high priest, and went in, and sat with the officers, to see the end. 9Now the chief priests and the whole sanhedrim sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death; 60 And though many false witnesses came, they did not find it. And afterwards, two coming forward, said, 61This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62 And the high priest, rising, said to him, Answerest thou nothing what these witness against thee? 63But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou art the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus saith to him, Thou hast said: moreover I say to you, from this time ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his

garments; saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy. 66 What think ye? And they answering, said, He is deserving of death. 67Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others struck him, 68Saying, Prophesy to us, O Christ, Who is he that struck thee? 69Now Peter sat without in the court: and a maid servant came to him, saying, And thou wast with Jesus, the Galilean. 70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. 71 And having gone out into the porch another saw him, and saith to those who were out there, This man was with Jesus, the Nazarene. 72 And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man. 73 And after a while, they who stood by coming up, said to Peter, Surely thou also art of them; for even thy speech betrayeth thee. 7+Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I have not known the man. And immediately a cock crew. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said, Before a cock crows thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

JESUS AGAIN EXAMINED IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER. Luke xxii., 66-71.

66 AND as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him to their Sanhedrim, saying, If thou art the Christ, tell us. 67 And he said to them, If I tell you ye will not believe: 68 And if I shall ask, ye will not answer. 69 But henceforth shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70And all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, Why need we any further testimony? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.

THE JEWS DEMAND HIS DEATH BECAUSE HE MADE HIMSELF THE SON OF GOD.

John xix., 1-16.

THEN Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2And the soldiers having platted a crown of thorns,

placed it on his head, and they put around him a purple robe, 3And they came to him and said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they gave him blows. 4Pilate went out again, and saith to them, Behold, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no crime. 5Then came Jesus out wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And he saith to them, Behold the man! 6When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, Crucify, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him yourselves_and crucify him: for I find no crime in him. 7The Jews answered, We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. 8 When Pilate therefore heard this charge, he was the more afraid; 9And he went into the prætorium again, and saith to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Pilate saith to him, Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee? 11Jesus answered, Thou hast no power against me, except it were given thee from above: on this account he who delivered me to thee hath the greater sin. 12 From this time Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man thou art not Cæsar's friend: whoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar. 13 Pilate therefore having heard these words brought Jesus forth, and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14And it was the preparation of the passover, about the sixth hour and he saith to the Jews, Behold your King! 15Then they called out, Away, away, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar. 16Then delivered he him therefore to them that he might be crucified.

26 AND as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, and on him they laid the cross, to bear it behind Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of

women who were beating their breasts and were bewailing him. 28 But Jesus turning to them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that bare not, and the breasts that nourished not. 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry? 32 And two others also being malefactors, were led with him to be put to death. 33 And when they were come to the place called Kranion, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

39 AND one of the malefactors who hung there blasphemed him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing that thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42And he said, Jesus, remember me when thou comest in thy kingdom. 43 And he said to him, Verily I say to thee, To day thou shalt be with me in paradise. 44And it was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the earth until the ninth hour, 45 The sun being eclipsed: and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And Jesus calling out with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit: and having said this, he breathed out his life. 47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this man was righteous. 48 And all the

multitudes who came together to this sight, beholding what things were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49And all his acquaintances and the women who followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

THE DEATH OF JESUS.

Aecording to John xix, 16-30.

16THEN they took Jesus, 17 And himself bearing his cross, he went forth into the place called Kranion, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19And Pilate also wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And it was written, JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 23The soldiers therefore when they had crucified Jesus took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, They parted my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast the lot. These things therefore the soldiers did. 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Klopas, and Mary the Magdalene. 26Jesus therefore seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 A vessel was brought full of vinegar: then a sponge full of vinegar was fixed upon a hyssop stalk, and put to his mouth. 30 When, therefore, he had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and bowing his head, gave up his spirit.
