JESUS PRAYS TO HIS FATHER.

101

ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came from God. 28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. 29His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. 30Now we know that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any one should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. 31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? 32Behold the hour cometh, yea is come, that ye shall be scattered, every one to his own, and shall leave me alone; and I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33These things I have spoken to you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

John xvii.

JESUS PRAYS TO HIS FATHER.

Supper Chamber. 1THESE words spoke Jesus, and having lifted up his eyes to heaven, he said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that the Son may glorify thee: 2As thou hast given him authority over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. 3And this is the eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth having finished the work which thou hast given me that I should do. 5And now, Father, glorify thou me with thyself with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 61 have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world. Thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7Now they know that all things whatever thou hast given me are from thee: 8For I have given to them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. 91 pray for them I pray not for the world, but for those whom thou hast given me; for they are thine, 10And all my things are thine and thine are mine; and I am glorified

in them. And I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep those in thy name whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 When I was with them, I kept them in thy name and guarded them, and not one of them is lost, except the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 141 have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15I pray not that thou wouldest take them out of the world, but that thou wouldest keep them from evil. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And in their behalf I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20But not for these alone do I pray, but for those also who believe on me through their word: 21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us - that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou hast given me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 231 in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; that the world may know that thou didst send me, and lovedst them, even as thou lovedst me. 24 Father, what thou hast given me, I will that where I am, they also may be with me; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 250 righteous Father, the world also knew thee not: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou didst send me. 26 And I have made known to them thy name, and will make it known that the love wherewith thou hast loved them may be in them, and I in them.

John xviii., 1-11. Mount of Olives. Garden of Gethsemane.

JESUS having spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples. 2And

THE PREDICTION ABOUT THE DISCIPLES. 103

Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples. 3Judas then, having received the band of men and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, cometh there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4But Jesus knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and said to them, Whom seek ye? 5They answered him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus saith to them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. 6When therefore he said to them, I am he, they went backward and fell to the ground. 7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene. 8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away: 9That the word might be fulfilled, which he said, Of those whom thou hast given me have I lost none. 10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. And the servant's name was Malchus. 11Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

JESUS FORETELLS THAT ALL THE DISCIPLES WILL FALL AWAY FROM HIM, AND PETER DENY HIM.

Mark xiv, 27-50.

Scene in Gethsemane.

27 AND Jesus saith to them, All ye shall fall away from me, for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. 28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29 But Peter said to him, If even all shall fall away, yet will not I. 30 And Jesus saith to him, Verily I say to thee, That thou to day, even this night, before the cock crow twice thou shalt deny me thrice. 31But he spoke more vehemently, If I must die with thee, I will not deny thee. And likewise also said they all. 32And they came to a garden which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit down here, while I shall pray. 33 And he taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and began to be astounded, and depressed. 34 And he saith to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful even to death; remain here, and watch. 35 And going forward a little, he fell on the ground, and prayed that, if possible, the hour might

pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; turn away this cup from me: nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith to Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, that ye come not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 And again he went away, and prayed, saying the same prayer. 40 And returning he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy, neither knew they what they should answer him. 41 And he cometh the third time, and saith to them, Sleep on, and take rest it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Arise, let us go; lo, he who betrayeth me is at hand.

43 And immediately, while he was yet speaking, cometh Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, and the scribes and the elders. 44And he who betrayed him had given them a signal, saying, whomever I shall kiss is he seize him, and lead him away safely. 45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth to him, and saith, Rabbi; and kissed him. 46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 47 And one of those who stood by, drawing a sword, smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answering, said to them, Ye have come out, as against a thief, with swords and clubs to take me; 491 was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but it is that the scriptures may be fulfilled. 50 And they all

JESUS TAKEN BEFORE ANNAS AND CAIAPHAS. John, xviii., 12-40.

12THEN the band and the captain and the officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him, 13And led him away to Annas first: for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was he, who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. 15 And Simon Peter was following Jesus, and another disciple but that disciple was known to the high priest,

and he entered with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 16 But Peter was standing at the door outside. Then went out the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, and spoke to the door keeper, and brought in Peter. 17Then the damsel, the door keeper, saith to Peter, Art thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. 18 And the servants and the officers stood there, having made a fire of charcoal; for it was cold and they were warming themselves and Peter also was standing with them, and warming himself. 19The high priest then asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world: I at all times taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where all the Jews resort and in secret have I said nothing. 21Why askest thou me ? ask those who have heard, what I have said to them behold, they know what I said. 22And when he had spoken these words, one of the officers standing by gave Jesus a blow, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me ? 24Then Annas sent him away bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it and said I am not. 26One of the servants of the high priest, being kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? 27 Peter then denied again: and immediately a cock crew. 28Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas to the prætorium, and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the prætorium that they might not be defiled; but might eat the passover. 29 Pilate then went out to them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man? 30They answered and said to him, If he were not an evil doer we would not have delivered him up to thee. 31Then said Pilate to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any one to death: 32That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying by what death he was about to die. 33 Then Pilate entered into the prætorium
