BY THE LATE
W. M. BYTHEWOOD, THOMAS JARMAN & GEORGE SWEET,
LEOPOLD GEORGE GORDON ROBBINS,
OF LINCOLN'S INN, BARRISTER-AT-LAW.
HENRY SWEET, 3, CHANCERY LANE,
TO THE FOURTH EDITION.
Mr. BYTHEWOOD, the original Author of this Work, lived only to produce about one-third of his undertaking. Mr. Jarman completed the Work, the first edition of which appeared in the years 1821 to 1834, in ten volumes; and he also brought out a second edition of the first seven volumes. This edition was never completed; for, in consequence of the great interval of time which elapsed between the publication of the earlier and of the later volumes, a third edition of the former was required; and, accordingly, in 1841, a new edition was undertaken by the late Mr. George Sweet, of the Inner Temple; which, though called the third, was, in fact, only the second edition, so far as concerned the last three volumes. That edition was completed in 1850, with the exception of the volume on Settlements, of which only the original edition has appeared up to the present time.
The labour involved in preparing a new edition of this Work, necessarily great, owing to the long lapse of time since the appearance of the last edition, has been greatly increased by the alterations in the law and practice of Conveyancing introduced by recent statutes -alterations the extent and application of which is very
