Thus apa pirn fignifies here, according to the Jewish Reckoning. But St. John, writing after the Destruction of the Jews, computes in the Roman Way; and fo wpe Exτn, John xix. 14. fignifies, not Noon, but Six in the Morning. By which Obfervation thefe Places are perfectly reconciled.

31. In like manner the Chief Priefts and Teachers of the Jews, thinking themselves now abfolutely fecure of him, faid in Derifion one to another: You fee, he that undertook to be a Saviour of others, cannot fave himself.

Whereupon immediately the Veil which parted the Holy of Holies from the Sanctuary, was rent from the Top to the Bottom; fignifying the Diffolution of the Jewish Difpenfation, and the Opening to all Believers an Entrance into the Holieft, that + Heb. x; is, into Heaven, by the Blood of Je- 19, 20. fus. And many other ftrange Signs happened at the fame time, fignifying the great Alterations which God was about to bring to pafs in the World.

39. Infomuch that the Roman Captain himself, who was fet with his Soldiers to watch Jefus, obferving the Manner of his Expiring, and the Signs which accompanied his Death, faid; Certainly this was fome extraordinary Perfon, if not more than a Man.

40 & 41. Several Women alfo, who had attended Jefus and supplied him with Neceflaries in his Journey through Galilee; as Mary Magdalen, and another Mary (the Mother of James and Jofes,) and Salome; with other Women who came up with him to Jerufalem; ftood at a Distance, and were Eye-witneffes of all these Things. 42 & 43. And now, as foon as the Evening was come; because the next Day was the Sabbath whereon no Work might be done; 43 Jofeph of Arimathea, an honoura- one Jofeph of Arimathea, a Perble counfeller, which fon of Quality and Efteem, who

was of a pious Difpofition, expecting the Revelation of the Kingdom of God, and in his Heart believed Jefus to be the Meffiab: This Man, I fay, defiring to preserve the Body of Jefus from being caft out among the Malefactors, came to Pilate early in the Evening,and with great Courage begged that the Body might be delivered to him.

44 45. At firft Pilate was much furprized with this Petition, and could hardly believe that Jefus was dead fo foon: But fending for the Officer who was appointed to watch Jefus, and being fatisfied by him that fefus was really dead, he granted the Body to Jofeph.

46. Then Jofeph, taking down the Body, wrapped it in a fine Linnen Cloth which he had bought, and laid it in a new Sepulchre which he had caused to be cut for himself in a Rock, and stopped the Mouth of the Sepulchre with a great Stone.

47. All which was obferved by Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of Jofes; who followed after the Body, and took Notice where it was laid, with a Defign to come and Embalm it as foon as the Sabbath was over.

Women coming to anoint the Body, are told by an Angel, that
Jefus is rifen, ver. 1. Jefus himself appears to Mary
Magdalene, ver. 9. and to Two of the Difciples, ver. 12.
and to the Eleven, ver. 14. He gives them Inftructions to
Preach, ver. 15. and afcends into Heaven, ver. 19.

I AND when the

fabbath was

paft, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought fweet fpices, that they might come

and anoint him.

2 And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came unto the fepulchre at the rifing of the fun.

3 And they faid among themselves, Who fhall roll us away the stone from the door of the fepulchre ? 4 (And when they looked, they faw that the ftone was rolled away) for it was very great.

5 And entring into the fepulchre, they

And as they were in the Way, they debated among themselves how they fhould get that great Stone removed, with which they had feen *Chap.xv. * Jofeph of Arimathea ftop the Mouth ver. 47of the Sepulchre: But when they came at the Place, they found the Stone, to their great Surprize, rolled away before-hand.
