and intellectual instruction and improvement to orphans and other poor children.

Sec. 2. That said society, by the name of the "Columbus Female Benevolent Society," shall be invested with all such powers and privileges, usually pertaining to corporations, as may be necessary to carry into ef fect the purposes herein before set forth.

Sec. 3. That said society shall be authorized to purchase, receive, hold and convey such personal and real estate and property, as may be convenient for carrying into effect the purposes of this act: Provided, The same shall not exceed fifty thousand dollars.

Sec. 4. That this act shall be deemed a public act, and shall be subject to all such amendments and alterations as the General Assembly may think necessary, for the better securing the objects declared in the first section. C. ANTHONY,

AN ACT

To incorporate the Methodist Protestant Church of Pleasant Bethel, in the county of Coshocton.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That John Smith, Gabriel Evans, Esaias Baker, William G. Dean, Edmund Duling, and their associates, and those who may be hereafter associated with them, be, and they are hereby, created a body politic and corporate, by the name of the Methodist Protestant Church of Pleasant Bethel, in the county of Coshocton, agreeably to an act passed March 5, 1836, entitled "An act in relation to incorporated religious societies;"" and shall hold their first meeting for the election of officers, by the persons named in this act, or by a majority of them, giving ten days' notice, in writing, post ed up in three public places, of the time and place of holding the same. AN ACT

To incorporate the Adelphic Society of the Western Reserve College.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That L. Walker, E. Brown, E. A. Pitkin, Hezekiah Meech and James A. Peck, and their associates, together with such other persons as may hereafter be

associated with them, be, and they are hereby, constituted a body politic and corporate, with perpetual succession, by the name and style of the Adelphic Society of Western Reserve College; and by their corporate name may contract and be contracted with, sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in all courts of law and equity, in this State and elsewhere; may have a common seal, and alter the same at pleasure; shall be capa ble of holding personal and real estate by purchase, gift or devise, and may sell, dispose of, and convey the same: Provided, The annual income. shall not exceed five hundred dollars; they shall have power to form and ratify a constitution, and adopt by-laws for the government of said society, the management and regulation of its fiscal concerns, the admission of its members, and appoint its officers, together with all other powers necessary for the corporate existence and the proper and efficient management of its concerns: Provided, Said constitution and by-laws be not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States and this State: And provided also, That the funds of said society shall not be applied to any other than literary purposes, the purchase of books, maps, charts, pamphlets, newspapers, and the necessary expenses of the institution.

Sec. 2. Any future Legislature may alter, amend or repeal this act. C. ANTHONY,

AN ACT

To incorporate the Literary, Historical and Philosophical Society of Canton, Stark county.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That Harman Stidger, Dwight Jarvis, George W. Belden, Thomas Goodman, Abraham Lind, Daniel Gotshall, Samuel Lahm, James A. Saxton, Hiram Griswold, Arnold Lynch, Oliver P. Stidger and Elijah P. Grant, and their associates, be, and they are hereby created a body politic and corporate, for the term of thirty years, by the name and style of the "Literary, Historical and Philosophical Society" of Canton, Stark county, and by that name, may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and be answered, and defend suits of whatsoever nature, in any court having competent jurisdiction in this State or elsewhere; may acquire and hold property by puchase, gift of devise, either real or personal, not exceeding ten thousand dollars; may sell and convey the same in accordance with the provisions of the general laws of this State, and may have a common seal which they may alter at pleasure.

Sec. 2. The officers of the society shall be a president, vice president, treasurer, recording and corresponding secretaries, and an executive committee, to consist of five persons, who shall be elected separately by ballot, and take precedence in the order in which they are elected; all which officers shall hold their respective offices for one year and until their successors are chosen and consent to act in their stead.

Sec. 8. The executive committee shall have power to levy a tax, not exceeding twenty dollars in any one year upon each member, for the purchase of books, maps, charts and philosophical apparatus for the use of the society; may also levy a tax upon the members, sufficient to defray expenditures of the society; and to appoint such other agents as may be necessary to advance the interests of the society.

The society shall hold annual meetings for the election of officers, on the first Saturday of April in each year, and such other meetings as may be prescribed in the by-laws and ordinances hereinafter provided for.

Sec. 5. The society may, from time to time, enact such by-laws and ordinances for its government as may be necessary and proper, not inconsistent with the Constitution and Laws of the United States and of this State, or with the provisions of this act; and may assess such fines and penalties against its members for any violation of the provisions of this act, or the by-laws and ordinances under them, not exceeding twenty dollars, which fines and penalties shall be paid into the general fund of the society.

Sec. 6. The executive committee shall prescribe the mode of levying taxes, superintend the affairs of the society generally; shall annually report to the society the state of its funds and property, and shall perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the by-laws.

Sec. 7. All taxes, fines and other liabilities assessed or levied upon the members of the society, may be sued for and collected in conformity with the general laws of this State, applicable to the collection of debts in ordinary cases.

Sec. 8. Any future Legislature may alter, amend, or repeal this act: Provided, Such alteration, amendment or repeal shall not affect the title to any property acquired or conveyed under its provisions.

AN ACT

To amend the act entitled "An act to provide for the erection of certain bridges in the county of Coshocton," passed January 27th, 1836, and to repeal a part of

that act.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That so much of the fourth section of the act entitled "An act to provide for the erection of certain bridges in the county of Coshocton," passed January 27th, 1836, as provides that the bridges, by said act authorized to be erected, shall forever be free to all the inhabitants of Coshocton county, be, and the same is hereby repealed; and the county commissioners of Coshocton county are hereby authorized, whenever they deem it expedient, to demand such tolls from all persons crossing upon said bridges, or either of them, as they may think proper, not exceeding the rate of tolls author

ized to be demanded from non-residents, by the act to which this is an amendment.

To incorporate the First Congregational Church and Society of Greenville, in Darke county.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That Ernestus Putnam, Samuel Robison, James M'Cray, Benjamin O. Springer, and Herman L. Searle, and those who may hereafter be associated with them, are created a body politic and corporate, by the name of the "First Congregational Church and Society of Greenville," agreeably to an act passed March 5th, 1836, entitled "An act in relation to incorporated religious societies;" and shall hold their first meeting for the election of officers by the persons named in this act, or any three of them, giving ten days' notice in writing, posted up in three public places, of the time and place of holding the same.

To incorporate the St. John's Church, Dover, in the county of Cuyahoga.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That Albinus Lilly, John Stocking, Charles Hall, Jesse Lilly and Clark Smith, and those who may hereafter be associated with them, be, and they are hereby, created a body politic and corporate, by the name of "St. John's Church, Dover," agreeably to an act passed March 5th, 1836, entitled an "Act in relation to incorporated religious societies," and shall hold their first meeting for the election of officers, by the persons named in this act, or a majority of them, giving ten days' notice in writing, posted up in three public places, of the time and place of holding the same.

AN ACT

To incorporate the Wayne Academy.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, That Eli B. Smith, Samuel Miller, Jacob Frederick, John Riddle, James Clarkson, Samuel L. Lorah, William Peppard, Archibald Hanna and Samuel Irvine, together with such other persons as may hereafter be associated with thein, for the purpose of establishing a seminary of learning, at or near the town of Fredericksburg, in the county of Wayne, be, and they are hereby, created a body politic and corporate, with perpetual succession, by the name and style of the Wayne Academy, and by that name shall be competent to contract and be contracted with, to sue and be sued, to answer and be answered unto, in all courts of law and equity, and to acquire, posses and enjoy by devise, gift, grant or otherwise, property, both real and personal, and may sell, convey and dispose of the same: Provided, The annual income of said institution shall not exceed five thousand dollars.

Sec. 2. That the said institution shall be under the management of nine directors, with power to increase the number to fifteen, who shall be elected triennially; and the persons named in the first section of this act shall be directors until the first annual election, which shall be held on the first Monday of October, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight; and any six of said board shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of the business of the institution, but a less number may adjourn from time to time; said board to continue in office until their successors are elected and qualified.

Sec. 3. That said corporation shall have power to form a constitution, to adopt by-laws for its government, to prescribe the number and title of its officers and appoint professors, teachers, domestics, &c., as they may think necessary for the well-being of said institution, and to prescribe such rules and regulations for the efficient management of the same as may be deemed expedient: Provided, That the constitution, by-laws and regulations of the corporation, shall be consistent with the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this State.

Sec. 4. That any future Legislature may modify or amend this act: Provided, That the title to any property, real or personal, acquired or conveyed under its provisions, shall not be thereby affected or diverted to any other purpose than that originally designed.
