BONNAY (de) a family which came originally from the County of Burgundy, near Besançon.

In the archives of that town it is stated that in 1148, BRUtin de Bonnay, Knight, Lord of Authuison and Thuiré gave a donation, with the consent of Ronce, his wife, to the Abbey of Bellevaux. He also bestowed considerable gifts on that Abbey.

He had :

1. Peter, who follows.

2. Girard, Knight, Lord of Thuiré, died without issue in the Holy Wars against the infidels.

PETER DE BONNAY, first of the name, married in 1198, the daughter of a certain Knight, called Turpis, by whom he had:

1. John, who follows.

Renaud, who followed the fortunes of Stephen, Count of Burgundy, and of Girard of Vienna, his brother, against Otho, son of the Emperor Frederick, in 1209.

3. Bernard, Canon of Besançon in 1200; and two daugh

ters.

JOHN DE BONNAY, knight, Lord of Bonnay and Authuison confirmed to the Abbey of Bellevaux the gifts made to it by his father, in which he was joined by his brothers and sisters; he had :

PETER DE BONNAY, 2nd of the name, who with his wife Beatrice, gave to the Abbey of Bellevaux the fourth part of the tithes of Thuiré in 1276, for prayers to God for his predecessors. He left:

1. Othenin, Knight in 1286: and

2. William who follows;

William, styled a page in a deed of March 1280, married Agnes by whom he had :

1. Stephen, Knight, of whose posterity nothing is known; 2. John, who follows.

JOHN DE BONNAY, 2nd of the name, man at arms under Charles VI, married Jane du Bourg, by whom he had:

PHILIP DE BONNAY, who married Jane de Noseray, and left issue :

1. Stephen, Knight, thus styled by Duchesne. He still lived in 1431.

PHILIP DE BONNAY, Squire, Lord of Mureville, in Champagne, married Nicole du Fay de Burville, in Bassigny, by whom he had :

ALEXANDER DE BONNAY, Knight, Lord of Trois-Bancs, married Nicole de Chavigny, by whom he had :

5. Henri, founder of the branch of this family that settled in Clermontois, given later on.

BONNAY.

The Bonnay family came originally from Franche Comté, one branch of it which settled in Champagne professed Protestantism.

Henry de Bonnay, author of this branch, left of his marriage with Anne de Breuil, a son named Adrien, who married Jane de Gadières, by whom he had Augrand de Bonnay, living at the beginning of the 17th Century. He married Christiana de Foucault, who brought him five sons:

1. Louis, Lord of Breuil, who married 1st, Charlotte de Biganet, by whom he had no children, and 2nd Anne de Terriers, by whom he had one son, Francis.

2. Samuel, who married in 1657, Elizabeth du Houx, by whom he had Elie de Bonnay.

3. Abraham, who married in 1662, Anne de Condé.

Of these five children one remained in the reformed religion at the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Abraham took refuge in Holland with his family.
