COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS and SurgeonS IN BARCLAY ST., NEW YORK INSTITUTION, NEW YORK DISPENSARY, THE LYCEUM BUILDING, STUYVESANT INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY MEDICAL COLLEGE IN 14TH ST HAMILTON HALL, COLUMBIA College, . 168 √ SECTION I. Origin, Organization and Incorporation. S the LYCEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, and under its present name, the NEW YORK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES has an honorable record of nearly three-fourths of a century. Organized February 24, 1817, the Society was chartered April 20, 1818, and was re-named in 1876. In comparison with existing American Scientific Societies it ranks fourth in point of age. The American Philosophical Society, of Philadelphia, dates from 1769; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in Boston, began in 1780; and the Academy of Natural Sciences, of Philadelphia, in 1812. The latter was not incorporated until 1817. To the degree that any one society can, in a great city, be a scientific centre, the Lyceum and Academy has been that centre in New York. Its resident membership has included the great majority of men who, in and about the city, have been identified with scientific work; while the roll of Honorary, Corresponding and Resident Members might well be taken as the list |
