The Seal of SIR EDWARD DE CHERLETON, LORD OF POWYS, appended to a charter dated 6th July, 7 Henry V (1118), is adopted as the Seal of the Jowys-land Club. This remarkable Seal is not quite perfect, the edge having been splintered away, and the figure in the place of the crest having lost its head, which the engraver has supplied. It appears to have been a round seal, surrounded by an inscription, probably "Sigillum Edwardi de Cherleton Domini Powisie", of which only the "g" in the word Sigillum, and "wi" in the word Powisie now remain. The shield in the centre is charged with the red lion of Powys--a lion rampantand is probably held up by another lion rampant standing on his hind legs behind the shield, which is elasped by his fore paws. The side supporters, or rather ornamental figures (for it is said that supporters, in the present heraldic sense of the word, were unknown at that period), are wild men sitting astride of lions couchant.-Mont.
