EXTRACTS RELATING TO

POWYS-LAND FAMILIES

FROM THE

CEDWYN MANUSCRIPT, A.D. 1633.

THIS interesting genealogical record contains pedigrees of the most distinguished families resident in North Wales at the beginning of the 17th century. It belonged to the Rev. Walter Davies, M.A., Rector of Manafon, Montgomeryshire. Transcriptions therefrom have been made by the late Rev. John Jenkins, M.A., Vicar of Kerry in 1828; and by the Rev. W. Jenkins Rees, M.A., rector of Cascob, Radnorshire, in 1832. From the latter the late Mr. William Rees of Tonn Llandovery, in 1871, kindly made extracts of the following Montgomeryshire genealogies, for the use and information of the members of the Powys-land Club.

Sir Gruffydd Vychan of Powys.

Sir Gruffydd Vychan, Knight Banneret, knighted in the Field of Agincourt by Henry V, was the son of Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Madoc ap Gwenwys ap Gruffydd, ap Beli ap Selyf ap Brochwel ap Aedda ap Cyngen ap Elysan ap Gweliawc ap Beli ap Maelmyngai ap Selyf Sarff Cadau ap Cynan Garwyn ap Brochwel Ysgithrog.

Sir Gruffydd Vychan married Margaret, one of the daughters and co-heirs of Grufydd ap Jenkin of Broughton, Esqre.

Gruffydd ap Ieuan ap Madoc,married Mawd, daughter and heir of Griffri ap Rhys Vongam ap Ieuan Vychan ap

Ieuan ap Rhys ap Llawdden ap Iorwerth ap Uchdryd,

to Aleth, the King of Dyved.

Ieuan ap Madoc Gwenwys married Gwenhwyfar, daughter and heir of Griffri ap Riwallon Vychan, paternally descended from Iestyn ap Gwrgant.

Madoc Gwenwys married Arddyn, daughter and heir of Rhys ap Sir Aaron ap Bledri, Knight of the Sepulchre, who bare argent, three bulls' heads, coped sable, tyred or.

['Sir Grufydd Vychan, Lord of Burgedin, Treflydan, Garth and Gaerfawr, in the opening of the 15th century, with his elder brother Ieuan, are parties to a deed in the possession of Mr. Mytton of Garth, whereby Edward Charlton, Lord of Powys, grants several privileges for assisting in taking Sir John Oldcastle in the 3rd of Henry V, when the king himself was absent in France. From Dafydd Lloyd, eldest son of Sir Grufydd, are descended the Lloyds of Llai, of Marrington, and Welshpool. From Cadwaladr, the second son, the Lloyds of Maesmawr, of Rhandir, and Humphrey ap Roger of Treflydan. Benet Lloyd, gent., son of Charles Lloyd, gent., son of Humphrey Lloyd, gent., the son of Francis Lloyd, Esqr., the son of Humphrey Lloyd of Leighton, Esqr. (who was the first sheriff for the county of Montgomery in 1540), the son of Dafydd Lloyd, Esqr., the son of Sir Grufydd Vychan, Knight Banneret, ut supra.

The said Benet Lloyd, gent., married Anne, eldest daughter of James Matthews, gent. Her mother was

Joyce, daughter of John Pryce, of Newtown, Esqr., the son of Matthew Goch ap Thomas ap Rhys Dafydd Lloyd.

The said Charles Lloyd, gent., married three wives. The first was Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Arthur Crowther, Esqr., gent., and the mother of the said Benet Lloyd. The second wife was the said Joyce, daughter of John Pryce of Newtown, Esqr., before named; and Mary, eldest daughter of Oliver Lloyd of Leighton, was the third.

The said Humphrey Lloyd, gent., married two wives; first, the daughter of Rhys ap Morris ар Owen ap Ieuan Blayney, Esqr., and by her had issue Richard Lloyd, gent. The second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Owen, gent., and by her had issue, Edward, Rondle, William, Francis, and Charles, who hath issue Benet, etc.

The said Francis Lloyd, Esqr., married Janet, daughter and heiress of Meredydd ap Rhys of Kerry ; which Meredydd had married Agnes, daughter and heiress of Meredydd* (Penwaeth Ceri) ap Adda Moel, Esqr., ap Gwilym ap Howel ap Llewellyn ap Meredydd ap Maelgwyn ap Cadwallon ap Madoc ар Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd.

Humphrey Lloyd, Esqr. (the first sheriff for Montgomeryshire), married Gwenllean, daughter of Thomas ap Rhys Dafydd Lloyd of Newtown, Esqr.

Dafydd Lloyd, Esqr., married Elen, daughter of Jenkin Kynaston ap Grufydd Kynaston ap Jenkin Kynaston ap Madoc ap Philip ap Grufydd ap Gruffyd Vychan ap Sir Grufydd Vychan, Knight of Rhodes, ap Iorwerth Goch ap Meredydd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn. [NOTE.-The said Meredydd ap Adda Moel married daughter of Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March.]

Garth.

Edward Wynn, Esqr., son of Thomas, the son of Edward Wynn, son of Thomas, the son of Humphrey

Wynn ap John Wynn, the son of Gruffydd ap Reignold ap Sir Grufydd Vychan, Knight Banneret, ut supra.

Edward Wynn, Esqr. (the second in the above ascent), married Margaret, daughter of William Lloyd, Esqr., ap Ellisan ap William Lloyd, Esqr., ap Morris ap John ap Meredydd ap Ieuan ap Meredydd ap Howel ap Dafydd ap Grufydd ap Caradoc ap Thomas ap Rodri ap Owen Gwynedd.

Thomas Wynn, Esqr. (the second in the above ascent) married Bridget, daughter of Jeffrey Dudley, Esqr., brother to Lord Dudley, she was mother to Edward Wynn.

Humphrey ap John Wynn, Esqr., married three wives-viz., Ann, daughter of Sir Richard Herbert, of Montgomery, Knt., by whom he had issue Catherine, who married Gruffydd Lloyd ap Edmund, Esqr., who by her had issue one daughter and heir called Elizabeth, who married Edward Peers, Esq., and had issue Lloyd Peers, Esqr.

The second wife of the said Humphrey was Joyce, daughter of Humphrey Lloyd, of Leighton, Esqr., son of David Lloyd, Esq., the son of Sir Gruffyd Vychan, Knt. Banneret, ut supra, and by her he had issue the said Thomas Wynn, Esqr.

His third wife was Margaret, daughter of Reginald Williams of Woolaston, Esqr., by whom he had issue Robert Wynn, gent., and Mary, wife of Edward ap Thomas ap John ap Morys of Hendre Hên, gent.

John Wynn, Esqr., married Catharine, daughter of Howel ap Jenkin, Esqr.

Gruffydd ap Reignold, Esquire, married to his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Humphrey Plowden, of Plowden Hall, Esquire. His second wife was Joyce, daughter of Owen ap Ieuan Blayney, Esquire.

Reignold ap Sir Gruffydd Fychan married Ales, daughter of Gruffydd ap Ieuan Vychan, of Abertanat, Esquire, ap Ieuan Gethin ap Madoc Cyffin.

The said Gruffydd ap Ieuan Fychan married Gwervyl Hael, daughter and coheir of Madoc ap Meredydd ap

Llewelyn Ddu ap Gruffydd ap Iorwerth Voel ap Iorwerth Vychan ap Iorwerth hên ap Owen ap Bleddyn ap Tudyr ap Rhys Sais ap Ednyvet ap Llewarch Gam Lluddocca ap Tudyr Trevor.
