CHAPTER CLXXXI.

AN ACT to incorporate the Leavenworth Law Library Association.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of the
Territory of Kansas:

SECTION 1. That John Pettit, Thomas Ewing, Jr., William G. Matthias, J. C. Green, Pascal S. Parks, Robert Crozier, John C. Douglas, their associates and successors, are hereby created a body corporate and politic, by the name: "The Leavenworth Law Library Association," and shall have perpetual succession, may sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded, in all courts of competent jurisdiction; may have, receive, and hold property, both real and personal, suitable and sufficient to the carrying out of all the objects of the association; may make such constitution, regulations and by-laws as they may desire, not contrary to the constitution of the United States, or the organic act of this territory; and may have a common seal, which, together with the name of the association, they may change at pleasure.

SEC. 2. The capital stock of this association shall be ten thousand dollars, to be divided into such shares as the by-laws of the association or company may direct, with power to increase such capital stock to any amount which the interests of the association may require; and there is hereby conferred upon the corporation hereby created, all the powers, privileges and immunities which may be at the present session of the legislative assembly, or may have heretofore been, conferred

by law upon any and all corporations created by the laws of this territory, to the same effect and extent as if the same were specially enumerated in this act.

SEC. 3. This act is hereby declared a public act, and shall Public act. be in force from and after its passage.

AN ACT' to incorporate the Leavenworth Mercantile Library Association.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of
Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. That A. Carter Wilder, John A. Halderman, Champion Vaughan, Wm. C. McDowell, Lewis L. Weld, E. C. Jacobs, Samuel A. Drake, Thos. Ewing, Jr., Samuel A. Stinson, David H. Bailey, and George W. Gardiner, and their associates and successors, be and they are hereby constituted a body corporate, under the name of the Leavenworth Mercan- Name and tile Library Association, and by that name to have continual succession, and to be capable of suing and being sued, to plead and be impleaded, to answer and be answered unto, to defend and be defended, in all courts and places whatsoever; that they and their successors may have a common seal, and may change, break or alter the same at pleasure, and be in law capable of holding and conveying any estate, real, personal, or mixed, for the use of this corporation.

CHAPTER CLXXXIII.

AN ACT to incorporate the Paola Mercantile Library and Literary Association
Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of the
Territory of Kansas:

SECTION 1. That Charles Simms, A. A. Roberts, E. W. White, Goodwin Taylor, Seth Clover, W. C. Crowell, James A. Phillips and N. K. Wakefield, and their associates and successors, be and they are hereby constituted a body corporate and politic, under the name and style of the "Paola Mercantile Library and Literary Association," and by that name have continual succession, and be capable of suing and being sued, to plead and be impleaded, to answer and be answered unto, to defend and be defended, in all courts and places whatsoever; that they and their successors may have a common seal, and may change, break or alter the same at pleasure, and be in law capable of holding and conveying any estate, real, personal or mixed for the use of said corporation.

SEC. 2. That the object of said association shall be for the diffusion of useful knowledge among its members, and to that end as aforesaid may procure for the said association, by gift, grant or demise, suitable grounds, erect thereon proper buildings, found a library and reading-room, collect a cabinet of minerals and natural curiosities, and specimens in the various departments of science, institute a system of literary and scientific lectures, and such other appliances of education not inconsistent with the general design of said association.

SEC. 3. That said corporation shall have the power to ordain a constitution and by-laws for the admission and government of the members thereof, and to alter and amend the same

at pleasure; Provided, that nothing in such constitution or bylaws shall be repugnant to the laws of this territory.

SEC. 4. That so much of the property of the association, real or personal, the proceeds whereof shall be used exclusively for the uses of the association, shall be exempt from taxation.

SEC. 5. This act shall be in force and take effect from and

CHAPTER CLXXXIV.

AN ACT to incorporate the Hampden Woolen Manufacturing Company. Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly at Kansas, as follows:

SECTION. 1. That W. A. Ela, John Holins, M. E. Grimes and Charles Morse, their associates and successors, are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate, by the name and and powers style of the Hampden Woolen Manufacturing Company, and by that name shall be competent to make contracts, sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in all matters whatsoever, both in law and equity; and shall have all powers and privileges which are usually granted to such corporation, which may be necessary and proper for carrying the object of said company into full operation.

SEC. 2. That the said corporation hereby created shall May hold land. have power to purchase and hold any amount of land in the vicinity of Hampden which may be necessary for the purpose of erecting buildings and for the convenience of operating machinery propelled by steam or water power.

Company.

Territory of Kansas :

SECTION 1. That N. S. Goss and T. L.
