AGRICULTURAL.

CHAPTER I.

AN ACT to incorporate the Coffey County Agricultural Society.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of the
Territory of Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. There is hereby established and incorporated a society to be known and designated as the Coffey County Agricultural Society, and by that name and style shall have power to contract and be contracted with, to sue and be sued, to plead and be impleaded in all courts and places, to answer and be answered to, defend and be defended in all matters whatsoever, and shall in like manner have and use a common seal, and have power to alter or change the same at pleasure, and to make and put in execution such by-laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, as shall be proper and necessary for the good government of said society and the prudent management of its affairs; Provided, said by-laws, ordinances, rules and regulations be not contrary to the provisions of this charter and the constitution of the United States.

SEC. 2. The society shall have power to purchase and hold any quantity of land not exceeding twenty acres, and may Hold estate. sell and dispose of the same at pleasure; the said real estate shall be held by said society for the sole purpose of enclosures, buildings, and other improvements calculated and designed for Design of corpothe meetings of the society, and for the exhibitions of the various breeds of domestic animals or agricultural productions and mechanical and domestic manufactures, and for no other purposes, and shall hold all such real estate, buildings and enclosures free from taxation.

SEC. 3. For the purpose of carrying into effect this act, Hiram Bundy, Charles Morse, William A. Ela, M. E. Grimes, A. F. Wilkinson, James Beard, C. W. Mather, Richard Burr, Matthew Fennimon, John Earnhart, John Singer, J. W. Kerr, John J. Cox, J. B. Scott, John M. Espy, either of which may call the first meeting for organization by a notice in any newspaper published in said county, or by written notices sent to each of the others, sent by mail, or otherwise, and at such meeting, if one-half their number be present, they may proceed to elect the first board of officers, consisting of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and three trustees, who shall constitute an executive board, and said board shall have power to fill all vacancies that may occur in said board, and at that time shall fix the annual meetings of said society, and do any other business that may seem to them important to carry into effect the objects of this society.

SEC. 4. The members of this society shall consist of such persons as shall annually pay into the treasury of the society one dollar, and such persons shall be members for one year only; Provided, that by a majority vote at any annual meeting [they] may increase the sum not to exceed five dollars.

SEC. 5. The members of the society, by a majority of the votes present at any annual meeting, shall determine in what amount and for what purposes the funds of this society shall be awarded as premiums at the exhibition succeeding their meeting, at which notice shall be given in some newspaper nearest the meeting, and has the greatest circulation in the county, and in such other papers as may seem advisable. This act to take effect from and after its passage.

CHAPTER II.

AN ACT to incorporate the Doniphan County Agricultural Society.

Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of the
Territory of Kansas:

Incorporators.

SECTION 1. That Carey B. Whitehead, Eli Gabbot, Albert Heed, J. Maynard, Silas Stone, Lenard Smith, Joseph Thompson, Hugh Robertson, A. Q. Rice, Joel P. Blair, Joel Ryan, Milton Utt, G. R. Wilson, John Word, Abram Bennett, Onel Nelson, G. Gilham, Nathan Springer, W. D. Beeler, and their associates and successors be and are hereby constituted a.corporate body, by the name of the Doniphan County Agricultural Society, and under that name shall have all the powers ers. and privileges usually granted to corporate bodies of suing and being sued, having a common seal, altering or amending the same at pleasure, of holding real or personal property, and of doing all other acts and things necessary for the carrying out of this design; Provided, the same do not conflict with the laws of the United States or of this Territory.

SEC. 2. All property owned by this society not exceeding
ten thousand dollars in value shall be exempt from taxation.
SEC. 3. This act to take effect from and after its passage.
