SECTION 13. AN ACT

Relative to certain school districts in Jefferson, Indiana, Cambria, Westmoreland, Blair, Carbon, Schuylkill, Bedford, Chester, Delaware, Washington and Northampton counties; relative to supplying the several schools of the commonwealth with the state maps; and providing for a public high school, and for the education of colored children in the city of Pittsburg.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the farm and premises of Charles P. Cumming, in Pine Creek township, Jefferson county, and which adjoins the borough of Brookville, on the east, be hereafter attached to the borough of Brookville, in Jefferson county, for school purposes; and that the same be subject to the same taxation for the purposes aforesaid, as other property now in said borough of Brookville, is now subject.

SECTION 2. That the property of Wilson M'Donald, situate part in Centre and part in White townships, in the county of Indiana, be and the same is hereby annexed to the said township of White, for school purposes; and that the same be subject to the same taxation for the White, for school purposes aforesaid, as other property in said township of White, is now subject.

SECTION 3. SECTION 11. That the village of Crookville, in the township of Village of Crook- Nether Providence, in the county of Delaware, be and the same is ville, in Delaware hereby erected into a separate school district, to be called Crookville county, erected district, and as such shall have power to elect all such officers, and have all the rights and privileges granted by law to other school districts; and the elections thereof shall be held at the school house in the said village, and on the day and in the manner provided by law for holding the elec tions in the adjoining districts; and the qualified citizens of said village shall at their first election elect six school directors for the said district. two to serve for one year, two to serve for two years, and two to serve for three years; the said election to be conducted by two qualified citizens chosen by such citizens qualified to vote as shall be present at the time for opening said elections, and the successors of the said directors shall hereafter be elected in the manner provided by law in other school districts.

SECTION 12. That from and after the passage of this act, the terri tory within the bounds herein described shall form a sub-school district. which district shall be under the supervision of the directors of Hanover township, Washington county, viz: Commencing at the farm of William Gilliland, Robinson township, Washington county; thence to to the farm of Jane M'Cartney, Findley township, Allegheny county thence to the farm of David Gilliland, of the township and county aforesaid; thence to the farm of John Hammond, in Hopewell township, Beaver county; thence to the farm of William Patton, Hanover township, Beaver county; thence to the farm of James Hood, Hanover township, Washington county; thence to the farm of Thomas Bigger. esquire, Robinson township, and county aforesaid; thence to the place of beginning, including the above mentioned farms, and shall be subject to the same rules and regulations as are now in force governing subdistricts in other cases; and all school tax levied in said district shal be collected by the collector of the township of Hanover, Washington county, and distributed as is provided in similar cases by law: Provided, That the tax required to be paid by any person or persons under the act of twenty-seventh April, one thousand eight hundred and forty-four, relating to schools in Washington county, shall only include that levied on the property on which such person or persons

SECTION 13. SECTION 17. SECTION 18. That the said controllers shall perform the following duties they shall purchase real estate and erect thereon a suitable building or buildings for said school, or rent or hire the same; they shall receive into said school such pupils, resident in said city, as are found on examination properly prepared, and who desire to prosecute a thorough business education in arts or sciences, not generally taught in the ward schools, or to qualify themselves for employment as teachers in such schools; they shall also examine such persons as shall present themselves for teachers in any of the public schools of said city, and upon examination found worthy, shall give certificates of their qualification; they shall appoint the teachers of the public high school, and prescribe and regulate the course of study to be pursued therein; they shall determine what books of instruction shall be used in all the public schools of said city; the said controllers shall also provide one school or more when necessary, without reference to the boundaries of the wards, for the separate education of the colored children, to be located in a suitable situation, and appoint the teachers therefor.
