PREFACE.

DURING the past few years several works upon the Licensing Acts have been brought before the public, but no complete treatise on the law relating to innkeepers has hitherto appeared. The Author has by the present work endeavoured to supply this deficiency.

Every effort has been made to render the work practically useful, and with this view the chapters on Procedure have been introduced. The Author has also introduced a considerable number of American cases illustrative of the subject, not to be found in the English Reports, and the whole has been supplemented by an Appendix containing a "table of offences," all necessary useful forms, the whole of the Licensing Acts, and nearly all the other statutes referred to in the text.

For greater convenience, the references to the statutes which are not contained in the Appendix, are either

taken up in the text or enclosed in brackets, and the Statutes in the Appendix have been indexed.

The Author desires to thank his friend, W. A. Copinger, Esq., of the Middle Temple, Barrister-at-Law, to whom he is indebted for the fifth Appendix, and also to acknowledge the very valuable assistance he has received whilst compiling the forms in Appendix I., from J. Asher Foyster, Esq., the Clerk to the Magistrates of Salford.
