MEMORIAL and Joint Resolution relating to the urging upon Congress the passage of the act placing Gen. U. S. Grant on the retired list of the army.

WHEREAS, A bill is now pending in congress to place Gen. Grant on the retired list of the army, therefore,

CHAPTER 123.

Preamble.

Thanks tendered.

JOINT RESOLUTION.

WHEREAS, Robert W. Furnas, by his untiring energy and efforts on behalf of Nebraska, at the World's Cotton Exposition, at New Orleans, has made the Nebraska exhibit one which is most creditable to our state, and in which every Nebraskan may feel proud; and

WHEREAS, The said Robert W. Furnas, by said exhibit, has directed the attention of the whole country to our fertile soil and vast agricultural resources, which must and will result in building up our state and bringing within its border capital and people;

Therefore, the senate and house of representatives of the state of Nebraska, now in session, tender to the said Robert W. Furnas our most grateful thanks for his efforts on behalf of this state, and we hereby request and authorize the secretary of state to procure a suitable gold medal and tender the same, with a copy of this resolution to him; and that the secretary of state is hereby authorized to use one hundred dollars of the fifteen thousand dollars appropriated for the New Orleans Exhibition heretofore, to pay for said medal. CHAPTER 124.

AN ACT for a joint resolution to amend Section 4 Article
III, of the Constitution of the State of Nebraska.

Resolved, That section four of article three of the Constitution of the State of Nebraska, the senate concurring, be so amended as to read as follows:

The term of office of members of Change of con the legislature shall be two years, and they shall each receive pay at the rate of five dollars per day during their sitting, and ten cents for every mile they shall travel in going to and returning from the place of meeting of the legislature, on the most usual route; Provided, however, That they shall not receive pay for more than sixty days at any one sitting, nor more than one hundred days during their term.

That neither members of the legislature nor employes shall receive any pay or perquisites other than their salary and mileage. Each session, except special sessions, shall be not less than sixty days. After the expiration of forty days of the session no bills nor joint resolutions of the nature of bills shall be introduced, unless the governor shall by special message call the attention of the legislature to the necessity of passing a law on the subject matter embraced in the message, and the introduction of bills shall be restricted thereto;

CHAPTER 125.

Preamble.

MEMORIAL AND JOINT RESOLUTION concerning the people of Nebraska, and the lands known as the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad Company lands, and the Bill now pending in Congress for the relief of the settlers upon said lands.

To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of the United States:

WHEREAS, There are many settlers and purchasers of the public domain in the state of Nebraska, who have patents from the United States for said land, the title to which is now disputed by an adverse claim derived originally from grants of land by congress to a certain railroad company known as the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad company (i. e.) Kneevals and Mitchell land claims.

WHEREAS, Such dispute of title is a very great injury and wrong to many persons who have spent many of their best years in toil, deprivation, and expense upon such lands, and has

resulted in the confiscation of the homes of many of our best citizens, residing upon and owning said lands, and their eviction therefrom.

WHEREAS, A bill is pending in congress for the relief of the settlers upon said lands, which bill has passed the senate of the United States, and is now pending in the house of representatives thereof.

Therefore, Be it Resolved by the Senate and Urging conHouse of Representatives of the State of Ne- bill. braska: That the passage of said bill would be but an act of justice to those of our citizens who are interested therein.

Resolved, That we earnestly urge upon congress and every member thereof, regardless of their political affiliation, their immediate attention and favorable action upon said bill.

Resolved, That the secretary of state be requested to forward to each of our senators and representatives in congress, a copy of this memorial and joint resolution.
