TO CURRENT NUMBERS OF LEADING PERIODICALS.

NOTES. The collaborators are requested to examine this instalment closely, and be governed in their future work by the precedents here furnished on various points, as e.g., fulness of titles, use of capitals, arrangement and punctuation of references, etc. The abbreviations to be used for the months are simply the initial letters with the addition of a for Jan. r for Mar., for April, y for May and July, e for June, and u for August. The colon is not to be used after initials of proper names. Minor articles (any of less than three pages) should not be indexed. Book notices should be passed, unless, by summarizing the book or discussing its subject, they constitute a treatise on the subject. Poems by distinguished authors may be included, no matter how brief. Collaborators not having the rules furnished to workers on Poole's Index, will find, at p. vii. of the preface to that work, a summary of them that will be of service. Those desirous of further assistance in this line should address the editor, W. I. FLETCHER, at Amherst, Mass.

N.B.-The indexing is to be done on slips of medium heavy paper, the size of the standard catalog card (5 × 2 in.). The Library Bureau, 32 Hawley St., Boston, is provided with a standard slip, and will supply them at $1 per thousand, postage 40c. per thousand, or the indexers may provide themselves otherwise, absolute uniformity not being essential, except as to size. Collaborators will please index the new numbers of magazines immediately on their appearance, and send in the slips to the editor at once, except in the case of weeklies, when all the slips written in a month may be sent together, not later than the 25th day of the month.
