This report was prepared by the Bureau of the Census with the assistance of the Social Security Administration.

For the Bureau of the Census, responsibility for planning and compiling this edition was centered in the Business Division, under the general direction of Paul Shapiro, Assistant Division Chief, Current Programs. Louis Shapiro, Chief County Business Patterns and Special Surveys Branch supervised the preparation of this report, assisted by Floyd D. McNaughton. Thomas G. Scothorn, Jerry L. McDonald and Gerald Feuer contributed in resolving problems in the Multiunit Survey and in reviewing the data for publication. Staff assistance was provided by Max Shor, Assistant Division Chief, Staff and Special Projects and by Louis Greenberg, Coordinator, Economic Censuses. Computer programming was performed in the Economic Operations Division, under the direction of Marion D. Bingham, Chief of the Division and Sol Dolleck, Assistant Division Chief, by John Lannan, Robert S. Vermette and Bonnie Stelling. Important contributions were also made by Jack Margolis and Chester Fulton of the Economic Operations Division, and by Elizabeth L. Carpenter of the Administrative and Publications Services Division.

For the Social Security Administration, the work necessary to supply the basic coded records for this report was performed by the staffs of Ida C. Merriam, Assistant Commissioner for Research and Statistics and Joseph L. Fay, Director, Bureau of Data Processing and Accounts, of the Social Security Administra. tion. Guidelines for industrial and geographic classification were provided by the Division of Statistics under Robert N. Heller, Acting Director. The resolution of problems relating to the Establishment Reporting Plan was performed under supervision of John G. Kulick; geographic and industrial code problems were handled under direction of Marvin H. Robinson. Individuals in the Bureau of Data Processing and Accounts responsible for the direction of activities relating to the development and processing of basic coded source materials included: John C. Grogan, Sol Kreps, Glen W. Duey, and Huston Alford. Important contributions were made by John F. Wagenblast, Louis Lazarus, Francis P. Nagle, Joseph S. Keehner, Arthur W.
