lifter was taken, in attempting, as 'tis said, to carry off a Piece of Linnen, and committed to Jail: and we are informed, one Gentleman, on searching a Place he had Suspicion of, has found near sixty Pounds worth of Goods, which had been stolen from him; and several others have also found Goods they had lost. People are cautioned to beware of unknown Persons coming into their Shops; for it seems these have fallen upon a different Method than was practis'd at Philadelphia: Altho' we have some Reason to believe this is not the same Gang; yet perhaps the Infection may spread, by the Philadelphians not being able to apply a proper Medicine in Time for that Distemper there: Therefore 'tis hoped, that if any more Symptoms should appear, a little Alcaline Hemp may be prescribed to some of our Patients here, before the Disease becomes too violent and dangerous.-N. Tuesday last the Sloop Catharine, Capt. Ramadge, coming in from the Bay of Honduras, was drove ashore by the Tide on the Point of Nutten-Island, where she bilg'd; great Part of her Lading has been since taken out and landed here; but 'tis much feared the Vessel will be lost. - Ibid.

Last Friday Morning departed this Life, after a lingring Illness the Honourable Mrs. LUCY RODDAM, wife to ROBERT RODDAM, Esq; Commander of his Majesty's Ship Greyhound, now on this Station, and eldest Daughter of his Excellency our Governor: We hear she is to be interred this Evening

Good Mr. Parker :--Don't let the Character of our deceased Friend, Mrs. RODDAM, slip through your Fingers, as has that of her Person through those of the Doctors. That she was a most affable, and perfectly good natured Young Lady, with good Sense and Politeness, is well Known to all her Acquaintance, and became one of the most affectionate Wives.

were the sentiments of her later Moments, when I had the Honour to attend her. As this is intended as a small Tribute to the

ANN STOCKTON Lately arrived from England, has just opened an ORDINARY, at the House lately possessed by Mr. Richard Cooke Clark, opposite to Mr. Frank's in Dock's Street, where all Gentlemen and others may depend on the best Usage, of Dinners or Suppers, from One Shilling to Two Shillings Price, dress'd after the best Manner. Dinner always to be ready at One o'clock ;—or, or if any Person incline to send for it out of the House, they shall have it as they please to direct. Also the best of Jellies may be had at the same Place, on proper Notice.-Ibid.

New-York, December 31. Last Tuesday Night departed this Life, in the 67th Year of his Age, after a lingering Illness, the Rev. Mr. LOUIS ROU, Pastor of the French Protestant Reformed Church in this City, for upwards of 40 Years past: He was a Gentleman of great Learning, and unaffected Piety, and has left a sorrowful Widow, with a numerous hopeful Issue; His Character in the several Capacities of, Preacher, Husband and Father, was unexceptionable; He is now gone to receive the Reward of his Labours; and is as universally lamented as known by all he has left behind: His Remains were decently interr'd in the French Church, near the Pulpit he had so long occupied, on Saturday Evening last.-N. All Persons indebted for any Palatine Servants brought over from Holland, in the Ship Indian King, Capt. Tingley, are desired to pay the same forthwith to Christian Hartell, to prevent trouble. There is yet remaining several Men, Women and Children, to be disposed of by said Hartell; as also a quantity of choice Coca, fit for the London Market.-Ibid.

ON Monday, the Seventh of January, will be performed, a Comedy, called, A BOLD STROKE FOR A WIFE, (being the last Time

of its being perform'd this season.) To which will be added, an Entertainment called, The Devil to Pay, or, The Wives Metamorphos'd: Also, Colin and Phabe, to be sung by Mr. Woodham and Mrs. Taylor, in Pastoral Dresses.-Ibid.

At the Theatre in Nassau-Street this Evening will be presented, a Tragedy called, the Fair Penitent; with a Farce called, the Lying Valet.-Ibid.

New York, January 7. Wednesday last the Ship John, Capt. Deane, sailed from this Port for London, but in her Way unhappily struck on the South Point of the East Bank: And after getting off, they perceived she made Water pretty fast; on which they came too within the Hook; and after much difficulty, by reason of the great Quantities of Ice floating in the River, they got safe back here on Saturday last: They are now unloading her with all possible Diligence, in order to repair the Damage.— N. At the End of the first Act, a Harlequin Dance; after the second Act, a Pierot Dance; and at the End of the Play, the Drunken Peasant; all by a Gentleman lately from London. To which will be added, a Farce called, MISS IN HER TEENS; Also an Oratorio will be sung by Mr. Kean: Those Gentlemen and Ladies who please to favour this Benefit, are desired to send for their Tickets either to the Theatre, or to the Printer hereof, as there will be no Money taken at the Door; and the Curtain will certainly rise precisely at 6 o'clock.
