And so it was, that, while they were there, the days 6 were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she 7 brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling-clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And, lo, the angel of the 9 Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the 10 angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For 11 unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto 12 you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the 13 angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, 14 good will toward men.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from 15 them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

And they came with haste, and found Mary, 16 Luke ii. 16-20. and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in 19 her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and 20 praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, Jerusalem. they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the 23 Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the 24 Lord;) and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons.

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost 26 was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen 27 the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the

temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, 28 to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he 29 him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy 30 word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou 31 hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to 32 lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which 34 were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said

unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which 35 shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may 36 be revealed. SECTION 5.-(15) Wise men from the East, (being warned by the appearance of a star, of the incarnation and birth of the Messiah,) arrive at Jerusalem, and are sent to Bethlehem-where they worship the infant Christ-(16) The Holy family go into Egypt (17) the children at Bethlehem are slain-(18) the Holy family return to Nazareth. MATT. ii. 1—23; LUKE ii. 39.

No. 15.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of 1 Mat. ii. 1-12. Judæa, in the days of Herod the king, behold,

Jerusalem and

Bethlehem. there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? 2 for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these 3 things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and 4 scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, 5 In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art 6 not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, 7 enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And 8 he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, 9 the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding 10 great joy. And when they were come into the house, 11 they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in 12 a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
