INTERPRETATION OF THE PARABLES.

were able to hear it; but without a parable spake he not unto them: 'That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. And when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

SECTION 33. (90) Jesus interprets to his disciples in private, at their entreaty, the first and second of his parables: he adds three more; the last with an interpretation— (91) The relations of Jesus make a second attempt to see him; he returns the same kind of answer as before. MATT. xiii. 36, 18-23, 36-52; MARK iv. 10-25; LUKE viii. 9-21.

Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and when he was alone, they that 18-23,36–52. were about him with the twelve 'disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And Capernaum. he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: that seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables ? "Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 6 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. soweth the word. And those by the way-side, where the word is sown, 10 are they that hear the word of the kingdom, 12 but when they have heard, and understandeth it not, then 14 Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts; 15 lest they should believe, and be saved. This is he which received seed by the way-side. 17 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who when they have heard the word immediately receive it with gladness, and have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, 18 in time of temptation, 19 when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended, (and) fall away. thorns are they which when they have heard 'the word, go forth, and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and pleasures of this life, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as "in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience, 7 some thirty-fold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

And he said unto them, 'No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it 10under a bushel, or under a bed; "but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 12 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, 13 that shall not be known, and come abroad. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he saith unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given; and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which 15 he seemeth to have.

16 And his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto 37 us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of 38 man; the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the 39 wicked one; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the 40 angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned 41 in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

JESUS' RELATIONS ARRIVE A SECOND TIME.

the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant46 man, seeking goodly pearls: who when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that 48 was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and 49 gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

So

shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come 50 forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wail51 ing and gnashing of teeth. Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, 52 Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

1And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes,† which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs; exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way: 'and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran, "and fell down before him, and worshipped him; and cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? (art thou come hither to torment us before the time?) I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. (For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. 10 And there was a good way off from them, "nigh unto the mountains, a great herd of swine, feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, 12 If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine, 13 that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: 14 and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (15 they were about two thousand ;) and were choked in the
