JESUS' FIRST CIRCUIT OF GALILEE.

after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. And the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also; for therefore am I sent.

1 Lu. iv. 42,3.

1And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people, and cast out devils. And his fame went throughout all Syria and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judæa, and from beyond Jordan.

1 Mat. iv. 23. 2 Mk. i. 39. 3 Mat. iv. 24, 5.

SECTION 19.-When the circuit was drawing to an end, and the concourse of the people was greatest, Jesus teaches his disciples from some mountain in the neighbourhood of Capernaum. MATT. v.-viii. 1.

Mat. v. viii. 1.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into No. 58. a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples Mountain, N. of came unto him:

Capernaum.

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom 4 of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall 5 be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall 6 inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and 7 thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 8 are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Blessed 9 are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for 10 righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute 11 you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad for great 12 is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

:

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost 13 his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city 14 that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light 15 a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let 16 your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the 17 prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For 18 verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these 19 least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except 20 your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, 21 Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in

22 danger of the judgment: but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first

be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy 25 gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, 26 and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, 28 Thou shalt not commit adultery; but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath com29 mitted adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy

right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into 30 hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body 31 should be cast into hell. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of 32 divorcement: but I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou 36

swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, 37 yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

unto you,

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, 38 and a tooth for a tooth: but I say That ye 39 resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will 40 sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a 41 mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, 42 and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy 43 neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, 44 Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children 45 of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love 46 you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye 47 more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye 48 therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be vi.1 seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine 2 alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand 3

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they 8 shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things 9 ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hal10 lowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be 11 done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our 12 daily bread.
