THEN came together unto him the Pharisees, and cer- 7 tain of the scribes which came from Jerusalem. When they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled (that is to say, with unwashen) hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels, and tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, 5 Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well 6 hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit, in 7 vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." For, laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition 8 of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of 9 God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, "Honor 10 thy father and thy mother;" and, "Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death :" but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, 11 It is Corban, (that is to say, a gift,) by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do aught 12 for his father or his mother; making the word of God of none effect 13 through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. And when he had called all the people unto him, he 14, said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand. There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him, can defile 15 him but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 'If any man have ears to hear, let him hear! was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. And he saith unto them, Are ye so without under- 18 standing also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth in the man, it cannot defile him; because it entereth not into 19 his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught purging all meats? And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth 20 the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, 21

adulteries, fornications, murders, 'thefts, covetousness, wickedness, de- 22 ceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these 23 evil things come from within, and defile the man.

And they bring unto him one 32 that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multi- 33 tude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue : ' and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha! 34 (that is, Be opened.) And straightway his ears were opened, and the 35 string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged 36 them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure 37 astonished, saying, He hath done all things well! he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak!

And he said, Of a child; and oft-times it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to 22 destroy him but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are pos- 23 sible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried 24 out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief! When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the 25 foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and 26 rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted 27 him up; and he arose. And when he was come into the house, his dis- 28 ciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? And he 29 said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
