J., admitted to the bar, 1847, and practiced there till 1848, when he removed to Cincinnati, O. In 1851, he abandoned the law, and after graduating at the Theological Seminary, Gambier, O., took orders, in 1853, in the Protestant Episcopal Church. Rector of churches in Ohio, Chicago, Ill., and Baltimore, Md. After this he was called to St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn, N. Y., where he remained till his death.

"The Schencks trace their ancestry back to Colve De Witt, the founder of the house, a Hollander, who was killed in battle with the Danes, in 828. Christian, the first of the name, butler to the Count of Gulic, called by him Schenck, in 1225, was a younger son of the lords of Tontenburg. The name means cup-bearer, butler or wineserver. We have seen a copy of the hangman's bill of expenses attending the execution of Sir Martin Schenck in Holland, about 1589. He had some sort of 'onpleasantness' with the powers that be, and to prevent further trouble he was turned over to the public executioner. The cost of putting him and three of his faithful soldiers out of the way, was twenty five guilders and fifteen stivers. It is a quaint old document."-"History of Bucks County, Pa.," by W. W. H. Peter, a son of Peter and Magdalene Valleau, was born in 1723. Baptised* October 20, 1723; witnesses: Siack Laroe and Rebecka Jeyerse. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Stephen Cole,† of New Jersey. They had three children: two sons, and a daughter, Mary Magdalene. The sons died young.

Peter Valleau after his marriage went to Pennsylvania, and lived on a farm of one hundred and fifty acres, which he possessed in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, but the exact date of his leaving New Jersey is unknown. In a few years he removed to Marcus Hook,‡ a hamlet on the west shore of the Delaware River, about four miles below Chester, Pa.

We have been unable to obtain any information relating to the life of Mrs. Valleau. She made a visit to New York in 1766, which seems to have been more of a business character than otherwise, as the following letter from Mr. E. A. Marschalk, will show:

"Mr Peter Valleau
