In respect to the impaired efficiency of old age, one thing, I suppose, is apt to be not enough considered. The abatement of confidence in one's self is itself a vast loss of power. A person may be thought by those about him to continue in fair mental condition. But even if they judge rightly, yet if he is not confident in the same opinion, he is more or less disabled. The self-distrust which good sense, as well as modesty, requires of advanced age, makes him timid; and a timid writer is per force vague and ineffective.
