SAW PALMETTO.

(SERENOA SERRULATA.)

HE Fluid Extract of Saw Palmetto has long been commended by the profession as possessing sedative, diuretic, and nutritive properties, and employed with advantage in phthisis and other pulmonary and bronchial affections.

organs.

Recently attention has been directed to its vitalizing action upon the reproductive

In an article quoted in the Medical World from the Pacific Record of Medicine and Surgery, it is stated:

The fluid extract of this invaluable berry is a nutrient tonic, far in advance of the hypophosphites. It has a special action upon the glands of the reproductive organs, the mammæ, ovaries, prostate and testes. Its action is that of a great vitalizer, tending to increase their activity, to promote their secreting faculty.

It is specially indicated in all cases of wasting of the testes, such as follows varicocele, or is induced by masturbation, or which is often present in sexual impotency.

In atrophy of the prostate, so very common in cases of sexual perversion, this drug operates in a most remarkable manner, in overcoming the withered, blighted state of the gland, so in uterine atrophy dependent upon ovarian blight its action is unexcelled. In gynæcological practice it is much used to promote the growth of the mamma. It is of special value in diseased conditions of the prostate due to masturbation, excess, perversion of the sexual act, sedentary habits, or improperly treated gonorrhoea.

We shall be pleased to supply samples to physicians wishing to test this remedy who express a willingness to pay express charges.

SPECIALTIES.

Among remedies which are always in demand are alteratives, laxatives, and tonics.

We have a most eligible and therapeutically satisfactory line of these, and we claim that our facilities for securing the highest quality of drugs and their preparation are unequalled. We guarantee every unopened package from our laboratory absolutely as represented.

Among these classes of preparations we may commend especially as tonics, Coca Cordial, Pepsin Cordial, Esencia de Calisaya, Weld's Syrup of Chloride of Iron.

Of the alteratives, Syrup Trifolium Compound, Syrup of Hydriodic Acid [2 per cent.].

Among laxatives we have many formulæ. As a general laxative Cascara Sagrada stands easily first. Many of the laxative formulæ meet special indications.

History, literature, and all experience indicate that Medication has to play its part, and that Nature cannot alone restore lost function. The duty of the doctor to the patient is, in prescribing, to specify drugs the purity of which he can vouch for.

A physician with life dependent upon his efforts, equipped with a thorough medical education, with a full appreciation of the case in hand, and who with reliable drugs could effect a cure, may often prescribe his remedies with no knowledge of their manufacture, and therefore of their quality.

We invite correspondence from the profession concerning our products, and will afford all information regarding them desired.

ETHEREAL ANTISEPTIC SOAP.

We are now prepared to offer this product in the form of a colorless liquid of a pleasant odor. It is easily washed off with cold or warm water, and is invaluable to the pharmacist, physician, and surgeon.

Dr. W. W. Keen, the distinguished Philadelphia surgeon, says of it after considerable experience: "I find it the best preparation I know of for cleaning the hands and softening them. It also destroys odors about the hands. I use the soap constantly in my clinic and in my office with great advantage."

Mercuric chloride can be dissolved in it in the ordinary proportions. Such addition should be made only to quantities of this soap desired for immediate use; as upon standing for about twenty-four hours, more or less precipitation, apparently unavoidable, takes place.

Since its introduction its use has been extended successfully to the treatment of parasitic affections. There are not a few domestic uses for Johnston's Ethereal Antiseptic Soap. Three or four drops on a wet tooth-brush make a ready and agreeable tooth soap, which is good for the mouth. It is of service for tender perspiring feet. It removes misdirected soup or grease spots from your coat with great promptness. It restores the polish of patent leather, and it cleanses hair-brushes in a very satisfactory way.
