We have seen there wil be a day of Judement, and that the Fedge will judge the world in righteousneffe. We have seen there will be a tasföld fentence pronounced by him : Of absolution upon the Godly, Mit.25.34. Come ge bleBed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you: Of condemnation upon the wicked, v.41. Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting five, prepared for the Devil and his Angels. We hall cheretore here speak of the state of the wicked, after the righteous Fudge hash pronounced the sentence of condemnation upon them : and shall shew bow their bodies and souls being re-united, shall be lo continued in that life for ever, to undergo the punishment due unto their sins. Here three thing are to be taken into consideration, 1. The duration and continuance of their

per. fons, without ever dying or being destroyed or 15nihilated.

2. The duration of their pains, without e?er bling taken off.

3. The dreadfulnesse of those infernal pains ars to meits.

I. The Scripture speaks expresly that the wicked after the day of judgment shall not be confumes or annihilatid, but remain alive in soul and bod?,

of such as suffer in it. And as that fire is cerned eternal, lo that eternity is described as abfolate ; excluding all limits and determination. The end of the burning of fire is by extinguishing, and that fire wbich cannot be extinguished, can never end : But such is the fire which shall cor. menc the damned. And he bach told us plainly, (and thereby given us a fair warning) Mat.18.3. that it is better to enter into life bale or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be caff into everlasting fire : (Or as it is Mark 9.43.) ed for ever and ever (all which the Scriptures expresly teach) then shill the persons of the damned never be destroy'd or annihilated; but Thall subfift for ever, and be coeternal to the cormenting Aames. When therefore the Scripture fpeaks, that the wicked ( after che resurrection) fhall be punished with death, and that a second death, it cannot be founderstood , chac they shall be no more, nor(in any sense) be said to live, or subfift: For the enduring of this fire is that very death; and they are therefore said to die the fecond death, because they endure eternal torments. He that overcometh shall not be hurt by the second death, Rev.2.11. It seemes they which shall die that death, shall be hurt by it ; whereas if it were annihilation, and so a conclusion of their torments, it would be no way hurtful, or injurious, buc highly beneficial to them. But the living torments are the second death, For Rev, 21.8. It was revealed to St. John, that the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and forcerers, and idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake that burreth with fire and brimstone , which is the se* cond death. Now if to have a part in the lake be the second death, if that part be a perpetual coxtinuance and permansion in torment, (as is before proved) then to say that the wicked shall die the second death, is not a confutation of their eternal being in misery, but an asertion of it ;



because it is the same thing delivered in asher terms, As is well observed by che Learned Mr. Pearson in his Exposition of the Creed. Neither will the phrasis of perdition and deftruilien inler an annibilation of the persons of the damned, no an ending of their tormenis. For ciernity of de struction in the language of the Scripture, lize nifies a perpetual perpeffion and duration in misery. As in the 2 Thef.1.8,9. When Chriftshell come to take vengeance on them that know net God, and obey not the Gospel of our Lord Fesus Chrif, 'cis said, they shall be punished with everlasting de struction, from the presence of the Lord, and frena the Glory of his power.
