the first, together with the Father and Holy Ghost. Chrift as man hath the fecond, from the Father exprefly, from the Holy Ghost conco mitantly. John 5.27. All power is given him in Heaven and earth, because he is the Son of man. The Fatber therefore who is only God, and never took upon him either the nature of men or Angels, judgeth no man, (and the fame reafon c reacheth alfo to the Holy Ghost) but hath com mitted all judgment to the Son. And the reafon why he hath committed it unto him, is, because he is not only the Son of God, (and fotruly Ged) but also the fon of man, and fo truly man. And because,

To that this Prophefie receiveth not its full and fi al accomplishment till the day of judgment. As Chrift in his humane nature was unjustly judged,

in that nature fhall he justly judge. At his first oming he was not a finner, but he came in the arb of a finner, in the fimilitude of finful flesh Rom 8.3. But at the day of judgment he thall ome as one difcharged of that debt and burden without fin. Heb. 9. 28. And as one highly ho oured by God the Father.

2. Because God making a general judgment, vill have a vifible judge, which all they which hall be judged may fee. John 5.27. And hath iven him authority to execute judgment also, be aufe he is the Son of man, and every eye shall fee im. God is invifible; the Son of man thereFore will be Fudge, who will fo appear as to be Teen both of thefe whom he shall crown, and those whom he hall condemn.

The Son of man therefore being represented n the Scriptures, as making the great decretory eparation between man and man; as an husbandnan feparating the wheat fometimes from the haffe, fometimes from the tares; as a fisherman athering the good fish, cafting the bad away, as bridegroom receiving the wife, excluding the oolifh virgins; as a Mafter diftinguishing the ferants of his Family, rewarding the faithful, purishing the unprofitable; as a shepherd dividing is fheep from the goats, placing one on the right

hand,

Chap.10. hand, the other on the left: It will from thence follow, that the fame Son of man (who is also the Son of God, God and man in the fame perion) is appointed Fudge of the world. Of Chrifts first coming indeed its faid, John 3.17. God fent not his fon into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be faved. He came not then as a Fudge, but as a Redeemer; but his fecond coming will be to judge the quick

and the dead.

We have seen who shall be the Fudge.

3. It followes in the next place, that we enquire into the nature and manner of this judge

ment.

And here we shall speak,

1. Of the preparations to it.

2. In what manner it will be performed. I. The preparations for the Fudg's approach, the Scripture fets down in these two Parti lars.

1. The Arch Angels Trumpet, by whichd the world fhall be as it were) fummoned to ap pear before Chrifts Tribunal. 1 Thel. 4.16 Fr the Lord himself fhall defcend from Heaven withs fhout, with the voice of the Arch-Angel, and w the Trump of God, and the dead in Chrift ha rife first. Mat.24.31. And he shall send bis Av gels with a great found of a Trumpet, and they bu gather together his Elect from the four winds, fro one end of Heaven to the other. At the giving

he Law, the voice of the Trumpet was exceedng load; but what a terrible blast will this be? Such as fhall be heard all the world over, starting the dead out of their graves, and fummoning he whole world to come to judgment.

2. The fign of the Son of man. What that is, we cannot certainly tell, till experience manieft it. Interpreters probably conjecture, it will be fome mighty brightneffe, fome forerunning eams of Majesty and Glory which fhall darken the reat Luminaries of the world, and strike a terONT into the hearts of men.

II. Let us confider the nature and manner of his great judgment. The Scripture represents it cous, under a formal, judiciary processe, where

n,

1. The Fudge himself will appear exceeding lorious, adorn'd with Majefty, and cloathed with unfpakeable luftre: He will come with power and great glory, Mat.24 30. Even the Glory of the Father, Mat. 16.27. The Glory of a thousand Suns made into one, will be nothing to that wherein Chrift fhall appear in mans nature ac chat great day. The beams of his Glory shall da le the eyes of finners, and delight the eyes of Saints. When his Glory fhall be revealed, the Saints shall be glad with exceeding joy, 1 Pet.

7.13.

2. His attendance will be very glorious. The glorious Angels fhall be Chrifs attendants at

that

Chap. 20, that day. If at the time of his nativity, tentation, paffion, refurrection, afcention they readily gave him their attendance, how much more fhall they do it at this great day? Mat.25. 31. 'Tis. faid, the Son of man shall come in ha Glory, and all the holy Angels with him. Andi all the Angels must wait on Chrift, the numbe will be exceeding great, and the train will be exceeding glorious. What Glory fhall be in that day when the fervants of the fudge thill be Angels of power, every one ftronger than an earthly Army Angels, whofe countenances ar? like Lightning, and as much exceed in Glory the greatest Emperor in the world in his hightt pomp, as the Sun doth a Clodof earth. Obow great, how illuftrious will the plendour of this appearance be? when the Judge coming is the clouds fhall come thus attended?

13. There will be a Throne fet, a Tribunal, 1 judgment feat erected. Mat. 19.28. And Fes Jaid unto them, verily I fay unto you, that ye which bave followed me in the regeneration, when the fo of man fhall fit in the Throne of his Glory, ge Shall fit upon twelve Thrones, judging the twee Tribes of Ifrael. And that this Throne is a fex not only of Majesty, but judicature, may fer ther appear by Rom. 14. 10. But why doft thes judge thy brother? or why doft thou fet at nough thy brother? we shall all stand before the judgmes feat of Chrift. And a Cor.5.10. For we ma
