II. of Fudgment. It is mainly necessary in order to the practise of Godlineß, and ordering our conversation aright, that we firmly believe, and have frequent, deep, and serious medications of the day, of judg. ment.

In treating of which I shall enquire, : 1. How we may be assured there is a judgment, o come ?

2. who will be the Fudge at that great Asizes?

3. What will be the nature and manner of that udgment i whas the judicial proceedings at thas

4. What the consequents of it?

For the first. The Scripture seems to hold forth unto us a Etrafold judgment to come.

First, Particular, which followes immediatly after death. Thus is chac understood, Ecclef 12.7. Then fhall the dust-return to the carth, as it # 48, and the Spirit sball return to God who gave it,i.e, to be judged by him as the Chaldee Paraphrast doch well explain ir. And chac Historical Parable of Dives and Lazarus ihews how immediately after they were dead, the one went to Hell, the other to A. brahams bofom. Thac (I say) doth thew that every one particularly, when he diech, judged, and receiveth either reward or pupish

Secondly, General, & the end of the world. The cercaincy of which may appear to us from these Arguments,

1. From the voice of natural Canfcienti, which is very sensible of it. Fælix trembled. when Paul preached of it, Acts 2 4.25. Ang when he discoursed to the Alberians, those grex Lights of the Gentile world, as 17:31. Thar God hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousnes, by that man whom k burb ordained; whereof he hath given afsur ancest to all men, in that be hath raised him from te dead; found some who mocked when they bea. of the resurrection of the dead; but against it


day of judgment none replied. So true it is which the fame Apostle elsewhere saies of the Gentiles, who had but the light of Nature ( and so a nataral Conscience) that they skew the work of the

Law written in their hearts , their consciences also bearing witnesst, and their thoughts the mean while accufing, or excufing one another, Rom. 9.2.15.

2. From the Faftice of God, which requires it. God being the Fudge of the world, as well as the Creator, we may infallibly conclude he will judge the world in righteousneffe. But as the affairs of this present lite are ordered (though they lic under the disposition of Providence ) yet they shew no fogn of an universal Fustice. Oftencimes the wicked flourish and prosper, while the righteous are afflicted and in misery. In this life boching more certain , chan chat rewards are not correspondent to the vertues, nor punishments proportionable to the fins of men. It cherefore here be a Judge of the world (and that judge be juft) there is a judgment to come in another world, and the effects thereof concern another 'ife. In that day there will be a revelation of ihe ighteous judgment of God, Rom.2.5. God will

hen shew a perfe&t demonstration of his Fustice , id men shall discern between the righteous and be wicked, between him that serveth God and him hal servetb him not, Mal. 3.18. 3. From the clear and manifest declaration of

the will of God. We have an expresse manifestati, on of Gods will and purpose concerning a judg. menc co come, Ecclef.12.14. For Godsball bring every work into judgiment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it beeuil, Acts 17.30. But now God commandeth all mer everywhere to repent. V 31. Because he hasb ap. pointed a day in the which he wil judge the world in righteousnesse, by that man whom be bath ordained. No Doétrine more clear and fundamental in the Word of God, chan chac of Eternal judgment, Heb.6.2. Wherein the Fudge will sentence to 4n eternall

state. 4. From a represeptation of it to the eies of fome of Gods servants in Divine visions. As to Daniel, Chap.7.9. I beheld till the T brones were cast d'ows, and the Ancient of daies did far, sobe garment was white as from, and the hair of his head like the pure wool; bus Throne was like the fi: my flame, and his wheels as burning fire, V.10. A fiery stream iffud and came forth from before bis Thousand Thowfands ministred unto him, and t87 thousand times ten thousand stood before bime : The judgment was fet and the books were opened. An likewise to Sr. Fobin, Rev. 20.12. And ife the dead fmall and great stand before Ged, 2x: the books were opened; and another book W4S oper ed, which is the book of life; and the dead nos judged out of those things, which were writies: the books, according to Their works. cheretore hath been already seen; the Fudge hath appeared fi.cing on it ; the Books have been already opened ; the dead, small and great have been seen , standing before him. The reprefestation of it to the eye, in those Divine visions, is a farther assurance of the certainty of it , than if it had only been foretold, and lo represented to the ear.

We see then there will be a day of judge ment.

2. In the second place, let us enquire whothat Persor is who shall be the Fudge at that great alfizes.; who shall set upon the Throne's before whose Tribunal we shall all appear; from whose mouth me may expect our sentence. 'The judiciary power is the power of God. The power and authority of judging is common to the three Perfons , being one and the fame God; but the execution of this judiciary power is committed particularly to the Sox; and so the Father and the Holy Ghoft will actually judge the world no otherwise but by him. He is ordained of God to be the judge of quick and dead, Acts 10.42. He will judge the world by that man whom he hath'ordained, &c. its1j. 31. The Father judgeth no man, but barb coma. mitted all judgment to tbe Son. He hash given him authority to execute judgment, Juho 5.22, 27, There is therefore an original, Supream, judiciAry power, and a judiciary power delegated, dea rived, given by commißion.
