heart be pestered with revengeful thoughts: take that sword in Mat.6.14,15. If ye forgive men their trespases, your Heavenly Father will forgive you ; But if ye forgive not men their trespases, neither will your Father forgive your trepases. If luft be stirring in chee, take that Sword in Mat.5.28. But I say unto you, whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, bahcommitted adultery with her already in his heart. If pride, take that sword, 1 Pet.5.5. God refifts the proud, and gives Grace to the bumble. If Covetorfnesse, take that sword, Luke 12.15. Gods servants in all ages, have seen a great deal of reason, to resolve within chemselves, co take heed of offending with their tongues, and to pray earnestly co the Lord, chat he would please
to set a watch before their mouths, and to keep the door of tbeir lips. 'Tis a great part of Religion, rightly to govern and bridle the tongue. if any man secmet' to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, this mans religion is vain, Jam,1,26. And the transgression of the tongue is che ra. ther co be watched against, because of the natsral proxenesse thac is in us to offend in chat kind. We are exceedingly apt to fall into this fin ; partly, because of that quick intercourse that is between the congue, and the heart, so that we fin in an instant; partly, because speech is an A&t we perform without labour, and so we che more easily offend this way: And lastly, because the fins of the congue are very pleasing, and compliant with corrupc nature. Therefore Si Fames saith, Fam. 3.V.2. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfečt man. inl. Noc only a beginner, but one chac is come to some ripenesse, and growth in Christianity; his care and watchfulnesse over his words, argues him to be a found, fincere, and upright Christian. Oh how much reason have we to be serionfly humbled for the errours and miscarriages of our congues ! Divide the fons of man into two parts, saies Nazianzen, and one half of them are the fons of the tongue. One reckons up twenty four fins of the congue, and yet poflibly he hath noc reckoned all.
