PREFACE.

HE following addresses were not written with a view to publication. They are the humble attempt of the author, in the school over which he has the privilege to preside, to impress upon the minds of his beloved young friends, the value of God's Holy Word. He has endeavoured by some familiar, and sometimes striking emblems, to set forth some of the wonderful excellences of the Bible. The arrangement of them adopted here, he has found pleasing to his young friends, and easy to be remembered; for, although the Acrostics were given at long intervals-over a period of two years, on questioning the scholars at the end of that time, the whole of the emblems were remembered; and in many cases the lines of verses in which the names appeared were remembered too; and he trusts, by the Divine blessing, have been productive of good.

It is always more easy to command the attention and fix the memory of children, (at least, the writer

has found it so), by presenting truth in the simplest form, adopting sometimes the pictorial and sometimes the illustrative style. It was in this art of illustrative teaching, that the late Rev. Alexander Fletcher-that Prince of Preachers to the young-so much excelled. The author has endeavoured, in a more humble way, to use the same means of success. He is indebted to the Doctor's sermons for the idea of several of the emblems contained in the following pages.

And now, to those who are engaged in the glorious work of training the little ones for Christ, the author would say, "Be united, encourage one another in working for Jesus; and, by-and-bye, when the storms of life are over, and the fashions of this world have passed away, when the sun shall pale before the brighter glory, may it be yours and mine to stand upon Mount Zion with children round us that we have been honoured to bring to Christ, and hear the Saviour say, 'Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.'" Amen.

Dec., 1866.
