In John 17, Jesus prays for our unity as believers five times because, he says, unity is critical to people believing that he was sent by God. Yet today's Southern Baptists are divided over issues such as worship waras, elder rule, and Calvinism. Squabbling within the denomination undermines our Christian witness to the world, presenting only a caricature of Jesus. Even worse, people outside the denomination love to see us fight with each other, because it discredits our message and allows them to perpetuate their sin. Meanwhile, the world is dying, lost, and condemned. Overall, our church attendance has plateaued or dropped.
