Old Edtn. 472.

SWEET is Thy mercy, Lord!
Before Thy mercy seat

My soul adoring pleads Thy word,
And owns Thy mercy sweet.
Where'er Thy name is blest,
Where'er Thy people meet,
There I delight in Thee to rest,
And find Thy mercy sweet.

Light Thou our weary way,

Lead Thou our wandering feet,
That while we stay on earth, we may
Still find Thy mercy sweet.

Thus shall the heavenly host
Hear all our songs repeat,
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Our joy, Thy mercy sweet.

Old Edtn. 473.

Psalm cxix., 33, 40.

TEACH me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Thy law; yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of Thy commandments; for therein is my desire. Încline my heart unto Thy testimonies; and not to covetousness. Behold my desire is in Thy commandments; O quicken me in Thy righteousness. Psalm cxix., 31, 33, 35,

490 old Edtn. 475.

TEACH me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. I have stuck unto Thy testimonies, O Lord, confound me not. Make me to go in the path of Thy commandments, for therein is my desire.

Psalm lxxxvi., 11-16.

TEACH me Thy way, O Lord, and I will walk in Thy truth: O knit my heart unto Thee, that I may fear Thy name. I will thank Thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and will praise Thy name for evermore; for great is

Thy mercy toward me, and Thou hast delivered my soul from the nethermost hell. O God, the proud are risen against me, and the congregations of naughty men have sought after my soul, and have not set Thee before their eyes. But Thou, O Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth. O turn Thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; give Thy strength unto Thy servant, and help the son of Thine handmaid. Amen.

Psalm xxiv., 1-5.

THE earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is; the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and prepared it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord; or who shall rise up in His holy place? Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart, and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to deceive his neighbour. He shall receive the blessing of the Lord; and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

493

Psalm xxiv., 1-10.

THE earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord; or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Lift up your heads, O ye gates: be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? The Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.

Psalm xix., 1-5. Rev. xv., 13, &c.

Old Edtn. 483.

THE heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth His handiwork; one day telleth another, and one night certifieth another: there is neither speech nor language, but their voices are heard among them. Their sound is gone out into all lands, and their words into the ends of the world. In them hath He set a tabernacle for the sun, which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course. and marvellous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of Saints. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power; for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created. Hallelujah.

THE king shall rejoice in Thy strength, O Lord, exceeding glad shall he be of Thy salvation. Thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness, and hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head. 504 old Edtn. 485.

THE light of the evening now with gloom is blending All that is mortal to rest is descending:

Even the flower

In the fragrant bower,

Now feels night's power.

Keep distant all danger, all that may offend us,
Thou, Lord, watch o'er us, let angels defend us,

All power possessing,

Evil thoughts pressing,

O send Thy blessing.

From slumber awaking, let Thy love still guard us,
Lord, in Thy goodness with mercy towards us,
To every nation
Throughout all creation,
O give salvation.

THE Lord descended from above,

And bow'd the heavens most high:

And underneath His feet He cast,
The darkness of the sky.

On cherubs, and on cherubims,
Full royally He rode,

And on the wings of mighty winds
Came flying all around.
