Chapter IV: EXPENDITURES FOR PLANT AND EQUIPMENT

EXPENDITURES FOR PLANT AND EQUIPMENT FOR OPERATING MANUFACTURING ESTABLISHMENTS,

FOR INDUSTRY GROUPS: 1950, 1949, AND 1947

of

and

(Dollar figures in THOUSANDS. Excludes, for the year for which data are shown, expenditures: (1) for plant under con-
struction but not in operation; (2) for plants idle throughout the year; (3) for nonmanufacturing establishments
manufacturing companies; (4) for plants and equipment leased to manufacturers by owners; and (5) for used plant
equipment acquired from others...All major industry group (2-digit) totals and the "All industries" estimates include
the estimates for all component industry groups, regardless of whether or not separate data are shown for the individ-
ual industry groups (3-digit). Expenditures estimates are not shown for an industry group if the standard error of the
total expenditures figure exceeds 15 percent. The breakdown of a published total, by expenditures for plant and
penditures for equipment, is not shown when the standard error of either detail item exceeds 15 percent. Unpublished
estimates, including those which can be derived by subtraction, may have standard errors considerably in excess of 15
percent.)

swithheld because the estimate did not meet publication standards, either on the basis of the associated standard error of estimate or on the basis of consistency review.

1In the 1947 Census of Manufactures, smaller establishments submitting "short" form reports were not requested to include data on capital expenditures. The resulting understatement is negligible. For a measure of the degree of understatement, see Chapter VI of Volume I, "General Summary", Census of Manufactures, 1947. 2The percentage standard errors. shown in this column indicate the differences that can be expected between the estimates and comparable complete canvass totals, because of sampling fluctuations. The estimates will differ from the complete totals by less than:

1) The percentage shown: approximately 2 times out of 3.

11) Twice the percentage shown: approximately 19 times out of 20. (iii) Three times the percentage shown: almost always.

3This major group was not fully represented in the sample; capital expenditures estimates for 1950 and 1949, therefore, are understated by approximately 1 to 10 percent. The corresponding understatement of the "All industries" total is less than 0.5 percent. "Includes privately owned and/or operated establishments classified in Industry Group 19, "Ordnance and accessories". Government owned and operated

(Value added figures are in THOUSANDS. Data by size of establishment was not tabulated for 1949. Census series and related data, on the basis of the standard error of estimates associated with the figures shown have standard errors of 15 percent or less for these entries. Totals are shown for all major (2data are shown for the individual industries. Data for any size class which cannot be shown without A (d) appears in the column where the figure has been omitted, and the combined figure is underlined. As has been substituted, the figures for the individual industries will not add to the major industry group "All industries" totals, for those size-classes in which underlined figures for the (d) symbols appear for
