dwithheld to avoid disclosing figures of individual companies. sWithheld because the standard error of estimate exceeds 15 percent.

In the 1947 Census of Manufacturers, very small consumers were not required to report their consumption of carbon steel. The understatement of 1947 data for this reason is estimated at less than 2 percent on an over-all basis.

2The percentage standard errors shown in this column indicate the differences that can be expected between the estimates and comparable complete canvass totals, because of sampling fluctuations. The estimates will differ from the complete totals by less than:

(1) The percentage shown: approximately 2 times out of 3.
(11) Twice the percentage shown: approximately 19 times out of 20.

(iii) Three times the percentage shown: almost always. 3Data on steel castings were collected as a single item in the 1947 Census of Manufactures. In the 1950 and 1949 Annual Surveys of Manufactures, carbon steel castings were collected as a combined item with carbon steel mill shapes, while alloy and stainless steel castings were collected as a combined figure with alloy and stainless steel mill shapes. In this table, the 1947 data for steel castings have been combined with carbon steel mill shapes, since over 75 percent of the 1947 steel castings shipped were carbon steel. The degree of noncomparability for the totals shown in this release is minor since the consumption of steel castings is small compared to the total steel mill shapes consumed.

"Figures include small quantities or values of alloy or stainless steel. (See 1947 Census of Manufactures, Volume 1, Chapter IX, table 11.)

Data on consumption of metal shapes and forms for certain 4-digit industries were not collected in 1947. Estimates for 1950 and 1949 are included in the totals of this table only for those 4-digit industries for which comparable data were collected in the three years. Among the industries thus excluded, and which consumed a substantial amount of carbon steel, are industries 3499 (Fabricated metal products, n.e.c.) and 3599 (Machine shops). For this reason, totals for the 3-digit industry groups 349 and 359 are not shown. The effect these omitted industries have on the total consumption of carbon steel at the major (2-digit) industry group level, however, is believed to be insignificant.

withheld for security considerations, on the advice of the Bureau of the Budget.

INDUSTRY GROUPS AND INDUSTRIES: 1950, 1949, AND 1947

(Money figures in THOUSANDS. Estimates are published for industries (1) which consumed at least 2,500 tons of
alloy and stainless steel in 1950 and 5,000 tons in 1949, and (2) for which the standard error of estimate
for the quantity figures is 15 percent or less. Unpublished estimates, including those which can be derived
by subtraction, have standard errors considerably in excess of the published data. The total tonnage of alloy
steel, including stainless, produced and consumed in the same establishment and the individual industry group
figures for such tonnages are withheld because the estimates did not meet publication standards, either on the
basis of the associated standard error of estimate or on the basis of consistency review. However, it is es-
timated that the total tonnages produced and consumed in all industries combined did not exceed 2 percent of
the tonnage purchased or received through transfer in either 1950 or 1949. Industry group totals (2-digit and
3-digit) include only the estimates for those industries for which data on consumption of alloy and stainless
steel were collected in the three years. For a list of such industries, see the 1947 Census of Manufacturers,
Volume I, Chapter IX, table 11 and the text entitled "Metals" preceding that table.)

Table 5.--ALUMINUM MILL SHAPES AND CASTINGS CONSUMED BY METAL FABRICATING ESTABLISHMENTS, BY SELECTED INDUSTRY GROUPS AND INDUSTRIES:

1950, 1949, AND 1947

(Money figures in THOUSANDS. Estimates are published for industries (1) which consumed at least 1,000 tons of aluminum
in 1950 and 2,000 tons in 1949, and (2) for which the standard error of estimates for the quantity figures is 15 percent
or less. Unpublished estimates, including those which can be derived by subtraction, have standard errors considerably
in excess of the published data. The total quantity of aluminum produced and consumed in the same establishments for
the metal fabricating industries in 1950 was 43,431 short tons with a standard error of estimate of 3 percentand 25298
short tons with a standard error of estimate of 9 percent in 1949; data for individual industries are not shown because
the standard error associated with the estimates exceeds 15 percent in virtually all instances. Industry group totals
(2-digit and 3-digit) include only the estimates for those industries for which data on consumption of aluminum were
collected in 1950, 1949, and 1947. For a list of such industries, see the 1947 Census of Manufacturers, Volume I,
Chapter IX, table 1l and the text entitled "Metals" preceding that table.)
