SECT. 7. Be it further enacted, That the Treasurer of this Treasurer to ass State or his successor in office, shall cause to be ascertained, without towns the number of acres of wild land, situate in this State, which or plantations are without the limits of any incorporated town, or of any district or plantation, where Assessors are elected according to law (and which wild lands are owned by non-resident proprietors) and liable to be taxed. And the said Treasurer shall cause a true and correct list to be made of the same, and also of the several counties wherein the same are situated. And on or before the first day of November next, the said Treasurer shall transmit a copy of said list to the Secretary of State for the time being.

CHAPTER XIV.

AN ACT incorporating certain persons, for the purposes of building a
Bridge uniting the towns of Eastport and Perry.

SECT. 1. BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, That Aaron Hayden, porated. Jonathan Bartlett, Samuel Wheeler, Leonard Pierce, Ichabod R. Chadbourn, and Jery Burgin; with their associates, be, and they hereby are, made a corporation by the name of the Proprietors of the Eastport Bridge, and by that name, may sue and be sued, and may have a common seal and change the same at pleasure; and may make any by-laws, for the management of their concerns not repugnant to the laws of this State; and may at any meeting choose a Clerk and any other officers for managing the business of said corporation by a vote of a majority of the members present; allowing one vote to each share: Provided, No person shall be entitled to more than ten votes.

SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, That the said bridge shall be erected and extended from the northwesterly point of Moose Island, at Tuttle's Ferry, to or near the point of land at which said Ferry is established in the said town of Perry; and shall be built of good and sufficient materials, not less than twenty-four feet wide, and all covered with plank or timber suitable for such a bridge, with sufficient rails on each side for the safety of passengers.

SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That a Toll be, and hereby is granted for the sole benefit of said corporation, according to the rates following, viz. for each foot passenger or one person passing said bridge, four cents; one person and horse, twelve cents; single horse cart, sled or sleigh, eighteen cents; each wheelbarrow, hand-cart, and every other vehicle drawn by hand, four cents; each team, including cart, waggon, sled or sleigh, drawn by more than one beast, and not exceeding four, thirty cents; and for every additional beast above four, six cents; each single horse and chaise, chair or sulkey, twentyfive cents; each coach, chariot, phæton or curricle, forty cents; neat. cattle and horses, exclusive of those rode on, or in carriages, or in teams, six cents each; sheep and swine, one cent each; and in all cases the same toll shall be paid for all carriages, passing said bridge, whether the same be loaded or not; and to each team one man and no more, shall be Persons on mili- allowed, as a driver, to pass free of toll. And all persons who shall actually be on military duty, shall be permitted, with their baggage, to pass the said bridge, free of toll. CHAPTER XV.

AN ACT to incorporate Thomas Cutts and others for the purpose of manufacturing Iron and Steel in the town of Saco.

SECT. 1. BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, That Thomas Cutts, Persons Incor Josiah Calef, and their associates, be and they hereby are made a corporation by the name of the Saco Iron Works Company, and by that name may sue and be sued; and may have a common seal, and change the same at pleasure; and may make any by-laws for the management of their concerns, not repugnant to the laws of this State; and may hold any May hold propreal estate in the town of Saco, which may be convenient for et the carrying on the manufacture of Nails or any other manufacture of Iron and Steel in said town; such real estate not exceeding the value of fifty thousand dollars; and may also hold any personal estate needful for the employment of such manufactory, and actually employed therein, not exceeding the value of one hundred thousand dollars.

SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That when any proprietor may sell shares. shall die possessed of any share or shares in said corporation, his executor, administrator or devisee, upon producing to the clerk of said corporation, such proprietor's certificate or certificates, shall be entitled to receive a new certificate of such shares; and such executor or administrator may sell and convey the same at auction, observing the forms prescribed by law for the sale of shares in corporations when taken in execution as far as the same are applicable.

SECT. 4. Be it further enacted, That each share of said corporation shall be entitled to one vote; and any proprietor may vote by proxy duly constituted under his hand and seal; and the majority of votes shall govern, except in cases where said corporation may establish rules requiring the concurrence of two thirds.

SECT. 6. Be it further enacted, That the persons who for the debts of may at any time become holders of any shares or stock in the corporation said corporation, shall be chargeable in their private and individual capacity, and shall be holden for the payment of their just proportion of the debts of said corporation, which may accrue during the time of their owning such shares or stock, in proportion to the number of such shares, or the amount of such stock, whenever the property of the corporation shall be found insufficient for the payment of its debts; whether such persons continue to hold any shares or stock in said corporation or not. Provided however, That the private property of such persons shall not be holden to contribute towards the payment of any demand against said corporation, after one year from the day of their ceasing to be members of said corporation. And the goods and estate in the hands of any executor or administrator of the owner of any shares or stock, shall be held in the like manner for the payment of his just proportion of the debts of such corporation which may be due at the time of the decease of the owner of such shares or stock: Provided, The property of the corporation shall be found insufficient for the payment of its debts as aforesaid;

CHAPTER XVI.

AN ACT to establish a Medical School in this State.

SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, That the said President Authorized to and Trustees and Overseers of Bowdoin College, be, and appoint Profes: they hereby are authorized to appoint, and it shall be their duty to appoint, as soon as may be, learned Professors of Medicine, Anatomy, Surgery, Chemistry, Mineralogy and Botany, who shall deliver regular lectures in their respective branches at such times as the corporation shall prescribe.

SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That there be and hereby Grant is granted to the President and Trustees and Overseers of Bowdoin College for the benefit of said Medical School and for procuring the necessary books, plates, preparations and apparatus, the sum of fifteen hundred dollars to be paid out of the Treasury of this State, out of any monies not otherwise appropriated by law; and the further sum of one thousand dollars annually, until the Legislature shall otherwise order and direct.

CHAPTER XVII

AN ACT to encourage Literature and the useful Arts and Sciences.

SECT. 1.
