KIRKLAND.-EAST POND DAM COMPANY.

CHAPTER CCCXLI.

AN ACT to incorporate the town of Kirkland.

SECT. 1. BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in Legislature assembled, That Boundaries of the plantation or township numbered one, in the fourth range, north of the Waldo patent, in the county of Penobscot, bounded as follows, viz.: beginning at the corner of the towns of Dutton, Levant and Corinth; thence north by Corinth, to the southwest corner of Blakesburgh; thence east to the southeast corner of Blakesburgh; thence south to the northeast corner of Dutton; thence west on the north line of Dutton, to the place of beginning; with the inhabitants thereof, be, and they are hereby incorporated into a town by the name of Kirkland : And the inhabitants of said town, are hereby vested Powers, &c. with all the powers, privileges and immunities, which the inhabitants of towns within this State do or may by law enjoy.

SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, That any Justice First meeting of the Peace, within said county, is hereby empowered to issue his warrant to some inhabitant of said town, directing him to notify the inhabitants thereof, to meet at such time and place as he shall appoint, to choose such officers as other towns are empowered to choose at their annual meetings.

SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That the said town of Kirkland, shall be entitled to vote in the Choice of Rep. choice of a Representative to the Legislature of this State, in the same class and in the same manner as it was allowed and authorized to do, previous to the passing of this act, and shall continue a part of the class aforesaid until otherwise provided by law. SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That the said corporation, or their agent, shall, from the twentieth day of September, to the tenth day of July next following, annually, cause the gates of said dam to be opened to a sufficient height, to leave a space of five hundred square inches, at least, free vent for the passage of water through the same, if that vent for the water should be necessary for the use of the mills on said stream, except at such times as may necessarily require the said gates to be shut, for the convenience of persons making repairs on mills or dams on the stream running from said pond.

AN ACT to incorporate the Proprietors of the Brunswick Force
Pump Waterworks.

SECT. 1. BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in Legislature assembled, That porated. PORTLAND FEMALE CHARITABLE SOCIETY.

CHAPTER CCCXLV.

AN ACT to incorporate the Portland Female Charitable Society.

SECT. 1. BE it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in Legislature assembled, That Persons incor. Elizabeth Hopkins, Eunice Deering, Sarah Thrasher, Nancy Jenks, Jane D. S. Lovis, Jane McLellan, Elizabeth Leavis, Ann Douglas, Rebecca W. Osgood, Eliza D. Griffith, Sarah F. Griffith, and Eliza Ingraham, their associates and successors, be, and they are hereby created a body politic and corporate, by the name of "The Portland Female Charitable Society;" with power to sue and be sued; implead and be impleaded; defend and be defended; to have a common seal, and to alter or change the same at pleasure; and to make and ordain any by-laws, rules and regulations for the ordering and management of their affairs, not repugnant to the laws of this State. And the said corporation shall have power to purchase, take, receive and hold, for charitable purposes only, any real estate to the amount of ten thousand dollars; and any personal estate, for such purposes only, to the amount of twenty thousand dollars; and to give, grant, bargain and sell such real estate, and employ the annual profits of the same, and the annual profits of their personal estate, for the purposes of their institution; and to have, exercise and enjoy, all the privileges and immunities, usually granted to similar institutions.
