recommended to the Bishop to be admitted Candidates for Holy Orders, or to be ordained Deacons or Priests; and the substance of all other matters which shall have been brought before them; and such abstract shall be entered on the Journals of the Convention, and published therewith.

CANON VIII.—Of Parochial Collections.

There shall be made in each Parish in this Diocese at least two collections annually for the Missionary Society of the Diocese of Connecticut, one for the Church Scholarship Society, and one for the Fund for Aged and Infirm Clergy and Widows and Orphans of Clergymen. And the Treasurers of the different funds shall furnish the Secretary of the Convention with a report of the collections, to be published in the Journal.

CANON IX.-Of the Roll of the Convention.

The Bishop and Standing Committee, or in case of a vacancy in the episcopate the Standing Committee, shall, before the meeting of any Convention, prepare a roll of the Clergymen entitled to seats, to be used at the organization of the Convention.

The Clerks of the several Parishes shall, immediately after the election of Lay Delegates, transmit to the Secretary of the Diocese a certificate of such election, adding the names of substitutes for Delegates, if any such have been elected; and the Secretary, with two laymen appointed by the President at the preceding annual Convention, shall thereupon prepare a roll of the Lay Delegates, to be used at the organization of the Convention.

At the opening of any Convention, after Divine Service, the President having taken the chair, the Secretary shall call the rolls of the Clergy and of the Lay Delegates which have been prepared in accordance with the preceding paragraphs of this Canon; and if a constitutional quorum of those appearing to be entitled to seats in both orders is present, the President shall declare the Convention organized for business.

CANON X.-Of the Fund for Aged and Infirm Clergy and Widows and Orphans of Clergymen.

SEC. I. The Bishop, the Assistant Bishop, if there be one, the Treasurer of the Convention, together with five Clergymen and four Laymen appointed by the Convention, shall constitute the Trustees of the fund, and shall hold, manage and control said fund, and apply it at their discretion toward the support or relief of the aged and infirm Clergymen, who shall have resided in the Diocese and been in the actual discharge of the duties of the ministry for a period of not less than five years; and of the widows and orphans of Clergymen who shall have resided in the Diocese and been in the actual discharge of the duties of the ministry for a period of not less than five years.

SEC. 2. The Trustees shall make an annual report to the Convention, stating the amount received and expended each year, and the general condition of the fund.

SEC. 5. Each Parish in this Diocese shall pay to the fund, before the first day of June in each year, one doll cents on every one hundred dollars which it pays annual cal services.

SEC. 6. Of the amounts paid by Parishes in each yea of this Canon, one-half shall be reserved and securely i the principal of the fund, to which shall also be added, v designated, all special offerings from Parishes, and legacies from individuals.

SEC. 7. The other half of the amounts paid by Pari under Section 5 of this Canon, shall be added to the inco of the fund, as received up to the first day of June in sum shall be divided, before the first day of July in e shares among the clergymen entitled to the benefits Sections 3 and 4 of this Canon; provided, that the share shall not exceed five hundred dollars in any one year; no clergyman shall be a beneficiary of both funds.

SEC. 8. All income not expended shall be added each pal of the fund until the said principal shall have reach one hundred thousand dollars, and when this limit shall all surplus income of this fund not required for the pur of this Canon, or for other necessary expenses, shall purposes of the Fund for Aged and Infirm Clergy and W of Clergymen.

SEC. I.

CANON XII.-Of Diocesan Missions.

For its missionary work the Diocese shall be divided into six Districts, to be called Archdeaconries, as follows, viz:

SEC. 2. Each District shall be represented by the Clergy canonically resident within its limits, together with the Lay Delegates to the last annual Diocesan Convention from each Parish.

The presiding officer shall be an Archdeacon appointed by the Bishop from the Clergy of the District, after nomination at a regular meeting of the District, whose term of office shall be four years. In case of a vacancy in this office by removal from the Archdeaconry, by resignation or death, the Bishop shall, at the request of two presbyters, summon a special meeting of the Archdeaconry to nominate a successor. A Secretary and a Treasurer shall be annually elected by ballot, at the first stated meeting after the Diocesan Convention, from among the residents of the District, who shall hold office until their successors are appointed, and shall be entitled to vote at all meetings of the Archdeaconry. If the Archdeaconry so order, the office of Secretary and that of Treasurer may be held by the same person. Any vacancy in the office of Secretary or Treasurer shall be filled by appointment of the Archdeacon until the next regular meeting.

SEC. 3. The Archdeacon shall, subject to the Bishop, have the charge and oversight of all the Missions in the Archdeaconry; and, in the absence of the Bishop, shall preside at all the meetings of the Archdeaconry. It shall be his duty, with the advice and approval of the Bishop, to appoint the Missionaries, and such lay helpers at each Mission as may be necessary to assist in temporal matters. It shall be his duty, either personally or by deputy, to visit each Mission, aided Parish, and unoccupied town; and the necessary expenses incurred in the discharge of this duty shall be defrayed by the Archdeaconry. The Archdeacon shall present a report of the condi tion and progress of missionary work in the District each year to the Board of Directors at its annual meeting immediately before the Diocesan Convention.

It shall be the duty of the Secretary to keep the records of the Archdeaconry; and it shall be the duty of the Treasurer to receive contributions from the Parishes, and to forward to the Treasurer of the Missionary Society the amount required of the Archdeaconry less the amount appropriated by the Board to the Archdeaconry; to keep and account for the money of the Archdeaconry, paying out only such sums as he shall be authorized to pay by a regular meeting; and to present each year to the Board of Directors, at its annual meeting above mentioned, a report of his receipts and disbursements during the year past.

SEC. 4.

Each Archdeaconry shall have control and distribution of the money received from the Board of Directors of the Missionary Society in aid of Mission stations and feeble Parishes; shall apportion among its several Parishes and Missions the sums from time to time desired of it by the Board of Directors; and may at its own discretion, with the approval of the Bishop, undertake special missionary work, and raise funds for such purposes, provided it shall first have complied with the requirements of the Directors of the Missionary Society.

SEC. 5. Each District shall hold stated meetings for the transaction of its business, and no apportionments or appropriations shall be made except at these meetings.

It shall be the duty of each Clergyman, unless prevented by grave and reasonable cause, to attend the regular meetings, and to report all missionary work done in his cure.

SEC. 6. It shall be the duty of every Missionary and every Rector of a Parish aided by the Archdeaconry, to report to the Archdeacon on or before the first of May in each year, the number of services held in his cure, the number of pastoral visits paid, the number of baptisms, confirmations, and admissions to the Holy Communion, and the amount contributed by each congregation, all since the date of his last annual report, with such other matters as may throw light on the condition and progress of his work; and also to send to the Archdeacon in the months of January and September of each year, a brief general statement of similar purport.

SEC. 7. No Missionary Station shall be established without the approval of the Bishop, who shall also have power to remove Missionaries; and no appropriation shall be made by the District in aid of any organized Parish, except on the application of the Wardens and Vestrymen of said Parish, with the written consent and approval of the Minister, if there be one; and no appropriation shall be made by any Archdeaconry in aid of any organized Parish, except on the condition that such Parish shall concede a portion of the time and services of its Rector to other work under the direction of the Archdeaconry, and comply with any other condition that by the Archdeaconry may be required of it.

CANON XIII.-Repealing former Canons.

All former Canons of this Diocese, not included in these Canons, are hereby repealed.

CONSTITUTION OF THE MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF THE DIOCESE OF CONNECTICUT.

ARTICLE I. This Society shall be called the "Missionary Society of the Diocese of Connecticut."

ART. 2. The members of the Church in this Diocese shall constitute this Society; and it shall be represented by the Convention.

ART. 3. The Bishop of the Diocese shall be ex-officio President of the Society; and the Bishop and Bishop Coadjutor, if there be one, the Treasurer of the Society, and six Clergymen, who shall be the Archdeacons of the several districts, and six laymen, to be appointed by the Convention, shall constitute the Board of Directors.

Six members of the Board shall constitute a quorum.

This Board shall receive and disburse the funds of the Society.

ART. 4. There shall be a meeting of the Board, for organization, on the last day of the session of the Convention, at which time a Secretary and Treasurer shall be appointed.

Regular meetings of the Board shall be held on such days and at such places as the Board may appoint; and special meetings, for the transaction of any business, may be held at such times and places as the Bishop, upon the written application of two (2) members of the Board, may designate.

ART. 5. The Board shall make an annual report of its appropriations, and other proceedings, to the Convention; and the Treasurer shall also make a report of the state of the funds, including the names of the several parishes which annually contribute, with the amount of their contributions; and also a statement of any donations received from individuals; which reports, or so much of them as the Convention may direct, shall be entered on the Journals.

ART. 6. No alteration shall be made in this Constitution, without having been proposed to the Convention at least one day before it is acted upon, and the Convention alone shall have power to make alterations.
