CHAPTER 68.

An Act to Enable the City of Halifax to Borrow

Money.

(Passed the 23rd day of April, A. D., 1923).

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council, and Assembly, as follows:

1. The City of Halifax is hereby authorized to bor- Authority to row the sums set out in the schedule hereto for the borrow. purposes specified for each amount respectively, and

2. The sums to be borrowed, which may be bor- Terms of loan. rowed from time to time, and in such amounts as the Council of the City determines, shall be in addition to the amount authorized to be borrowed by the Halifax City Consolidated Fund Act, 1905, and amendments thereto, and shall form part of that fund, and shall be secured by stock or debentures to be issued in conformity with provisions of that Act, at a rate of interest not exceeding six per cent. per annum, and the dates on which the same shall be made payable shall be determined by the Council.

SCHEDULE.

For the construction of new sewers, not exceeding.

For the construction of permanent pavement, to be confined to work on tramway streets, and to be done only on petition of a majority of the owners of abutting properties, not exceeding..

Such sum as is required to repay to the Royal Bank of Canada the sums borrowed to defray the amounts payable by owners of abutting properties as their proportion of the cost of laying permanent pavement, permanent sidewalks and curbs and gutters, not exceeding in the whole...

An Act to Amend the Law Relating to the City of

Halifax.

(Passed the 23rd day of April, A. D., 1923).

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council, and Assembly, as follows:

1. In this Act the expression "City" means the City of Halifax, the expression "Council" means the City Council of that City, and any committee or official herein mentioned by name means the committee or official of that name of the said Council or City. The expression "City Charter" means the Halifax City Charter of 1907, or the Halifax City Charter of 1914, according to the sections of those Charters respectively as defined and now in force under and by virtue of Chapter (80) of the Acts of 1919, and sections referred to by number without other reference are the sections of the said Charters now in force under the said Charter, and this Act shall relate exclusively to the City of Halifax and the said Charters thereof.

2. The City may sell the property known as the House Engine Grafton Street Engine House for the best price obtainable therefor, and apply the proceeds to and for the remodelling or extension of Brunswick Street Engine House.

Non-resident 540. (1) Every person, firm or company not on contracts residing or having its head office or chief place of business in the Province of Nova Scotia, who enters into any contract for the construction or alteration of any building within the city shall, except as hereinafter provided, be liable to pay the City a tax equal to one-half of one per cent. of the total sum payable under such contract.

When due and payable.

(2) Such tax shall be due and payable immediately after work under such contract has begun.
