Pursuant to the Order of the Day the following Petitions were severally read:

Of Major Mark Whitcomb, and others, of the Township of Shefford; and of the St. Lawrence Division, No. 16, of the Sons of Temperance; severally praying for the passing of a Prohibitory Liquor Law.

Of the Municipal Council of the County of Shefford; praying that the public buildings now in course of construction at Nelsonville may be discontinued, and that the unexpended balance of the amount to which the District of Bedford is entitled, may be distributed among the Counties for the purpose of defraying the expense of erecting Court Houses and Gaols therein.

Of C. E. Bullock, and others, of the Village of Brighton; praying for the passing of "The Homestead Exemption Act."

Of the Municipal Council of the County of Lambton; praying for the passing of an Act to enable Sheriffs to sell the interests of purchasers of Government lands, who may be in arrear for taxes, in the same manner as they now sell other lands, and to legalize sales already made.

Of the St. Lawrence Mining Company; praying for certain amendments to their Act of Incorporation.

Of the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute; praying for aid.

Of the Municipal Council of the County of Bagot; praying for aid towards the im provement of the navigation of the River Yamaska.

Of Allan Gilmour and others, Merchants, Shipowners, and others, interested in the trade of Quebec, praying against the passing of the Bill to incorporate the Pilots for and below the Port of Quebec.

Of the Municipal Council of the County of Kamouraska; praying that J. Baptiste Martin may receive the amount claimed for his services as Clerk of the late District Council of Kamourasko.

Of Abraham Dube, and others, inhabitants of the Seigniories of Temiscouata; praying that the Seignorial Act of 1854, and the Act of 1855 amending the said Act, may be amended, so that they may not be dispossessed of the lands they now hold, and that they may not be obliged to pay a larger sum for the said lands, than the censitaires of the neighbouring Seigniories.

Of the Goderich Mechanics' Institute; praying for a continuation of their annual grant.

Of the Reverend J. Nelligan, and others, of the Parish of Ste. Marguerite, in the County of Dorchester; praying for aid to make a certain road.

Of Joseph Santee, and others, inhabitants of the Parish of l'Isle Verte, in the County of Temiscouata; praying for aid to continue a road, commencing opposite the Church of said Parish, across the Township of Denonville, in the County of Temiscouata.

Upon the reading of the Petition of John Stevenson and others, Reeves and Deputy Reeves, and Municipal Councillors of the Counties of Lennox and Addington, praying for the separation of the said County, from the County of Frontenac.

Notice being taken that certain papers were attached to the Petition, whereupon His Honor the Speaker declared the same to be irregular, and with leave of the House ordered the said Papers to be removed therefrom, which being done.

The said Petition was then read by the Clerk.

The Honorable Mr. Patton from the Select Committee, to whom was referred the Bill intituled "An Act to extend the jurisdiction of the County Courts," reported that they had gone through the said Bill, and had directed him to report the same with several

amendments, which he was ready to submit whenever the House would be pleased to receive them.

Ordered, That the Report be now received, and

The said amendments being twice read by the Clerk, and the question of concurrence put on each, they were severally agreed to.

On motion of the Honorable Mr. Patton, seconded by the Honorable Mr. Christie, it was

Ordered, That the said Bill, with the amendments, be printed and read a third time

to-morrow.

The Honorable the Speaker, presented to the House a Return from the British American Assurance Company, made up to the 31st December, 1859.

The Honorable Mr. Patton presented to the House a Bill intituled "An Act to abolish Dower in certain cases."

The said Bill was read for the first time.

Ordered, That the said Bill be read a second time on Monday next.

On motion of the Honorable Mr. Tessier, seconded by the Honorable Sir E. P. Tache, it was

Resolved,-1st. That by the Act passed in 1851, (14 & 15 Vic., c. 73,) it was declared that it was of the highest importance to the welfare of this Province, that a Main Trunk Line of Railway should be made from the Western Frontier of Canada to the Eastern Frontier thereof, and thence through the Provinces of New Brunswick and Nova-Scotia, to the Port of Halifax.

2nd. That by the said Act it was declared that all ungranted lands within this Province, lying within ten miles on either side of the line of the said Railway, might be appropriated in aid of that undertaking.

3rd. That since 1851 there have been built, with the guarantee of the Province, nine hundred miles of this Main Trunk Line of Railway, from Sarnia, at the western extremity of Canada, to Rivière du Loup, of which five hundred miles are in Upper Canada and four hundred miles are in Lower Canada.

4th. That one hundred and fifty miles of this road remain to be built, in order to complete the line from Rivière du Loup to the eastern extremity or frontier of Canada.

5th. That this continuation of the road is of the greatest national importance to the relations between Great Britain and Her Colonies in North America, independently of the commercial and maritime interests of the Colonies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

6th. That an humble Address be presented to His Excellency the Governor General, founded on the proceding resolutions, and praying His Excellency to communicate afresh with the Governments of New Brunswick and Nova-Scotia, as to the expediency of making, at such time as ay seem fitting, a joint and simultaneous representation of the three Provinces, calling upo. the Imperial Government for a grant in favor of this undertaking, in order to insure the completion of this Intercolonial Railway, which is destined to become the great means of comm nication from the Atlantic to the Pacific

Ordered, That such me-bers of the Executive Council as are members of this House do wait on His Excellency te Governor General with the said Address.

The Honorable Mr. Tessier oved, seconded by the Honorable Sir E. P. Tache, That it is important for the Navigation of the River St. Lawrence, to ascertain whether the Port of Bic, and that f Father Point, 160 miles East of Quebec, or any other Port in Canada, East of Quebec, ar Harbours where Ocean Steam Vessels may arrive during any part of the season during which the navigation is usually stopped at the Port of Quebec, and to the west of Quebec.
