CASE

· OF

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LUCIUS, LORD INCHIQUIN,

IN THE PEERAGE OF IRELAND,

ON HIS

Claiming the Right to Vote at the Election of
Representative Peers for Ireland.

Proposition I.
Page 11.

THE FAMILY OF O'BRIEN was for many generations possessed of extensive Estates in the South and West of Ireland, and in the reign of Henry the Eighth, were styled PRINCES OF THOMOND, the Chiefs succeeding each other by the Irish custom of Tanistry. As it was the policy of the Government of England at that period to conciliate the Irish, MURROUGH O'BRIEN, the Tanist, Prince of Thomond, who was induced to abandon his Title of Prince, was by Letters Patent bearing date at Greenwich the 1st day of July in the 35th year of the reign of King Henry the Eighth (1543) created a Peer of Ireland, as EARL of THOMOND, for his own life, with remainder to his Nephew, (the representative of the Elder branch of the Family of O'BRIEN,) and by the same Patent he was also created BARON of INCHIQUIN in the Kingdom of Ireland, with a limitation of that Title to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten.

The Claimant is entitled to the said Barony as the heir male of the body of the said MURROUGH, FIRST LORD INCHIQUIN.
