(q) v. 2. "A great nation." Besides the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham's first son, (amongst whom are the Saracens and Arabs of the present day) and besides the descendants of Esau, one of Abraham's grandsons, the descendants of his other grandson, Jacob, had so multiplied in less than 500 years, that the males of 11 of the tribes, from 20 years old and upwards, that were able to go to war, (excluding therefore old men, women and children) were 603,550; the males of the other tribe, from two years old and upwards, were 22,000. See Numb. i. 46. Numb. iii. 39.-And the Jews, a part of his descendants, have formed a distinct people down to the present time.

(r) v. 3. "In thee, &c." One of the pro

mises to Abraham that it should be in (that is in his seed) that the blessings, refere to in Gen. iii. 15. should come upon all the nations of the earth; that it should be one of his seed that should bruise the serpent's head and open a way for avoiding that curse whi Adam's sin had introduced. In Gen. xviii. God says of Abraham, "All the nations "the earth shall be blessed in him." An Gen. xxii. 18. "In thy (viz. Abraham's) seed "shall all the nations of the earth be blessed."

(s) v. 4." So Abraham departed." Abraham had 300 miles to go to Canaan; he had knowledge of the country, and had to pass the dangerous and barren desarts of Palmeryta Patr. His obedience is accordingly applaude Heb. xi. 8. "By faith Abraham, when he was "called to go out into a place which he shou "after receive for an inheritance, obeyed: "and he went out, not knowing whither

And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth." 7. And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. 8. And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. 9. And they said unto him, "Where is Sarah thy wife?" And he said, "Behold, in the tent." 10. And he said, "I will certainly return "unto thee according to the time of life; " and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son." And Sarah heard it in the tent-door, which was behind him. 11. Now Abraham and Sarah were (z) old, and well stricken in

age and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 12. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, "After I am waxed old, shall I have "pleasure, my lord being old also?" 13. And (a) the LORD said unto Abraham, "Wherefore did Sarah laugh, faying, "Shall I of a surety bear a child, which "am old? 14. Is any thing too hard for "the LORD? At the time appointed will "I return unto thee, according to the time "of life, and Sarah shall have a son." 15. Then Sarah denied, saying, "I laughed "not" for she was afraid. And he said, "Nay, but thou didst laugh." 16. And the men rose up from thence, and looked towards Sodom: And Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. 17. And the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abra"ham that thing which I do; 18. seeing "that Abraham shall surely become a great "and mighty nation, and (b) all the nations "of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Peradventure there "shall lack five of the fifty righteous: "wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of "five?" And he said, "If I find there "forty and five, I will not destroy it." 29. And he spake unto him yet again, and said, "Peradventure there shall be forty "found there." And he said, "I will not "do it for forties sake." 30. And he said unto him, "O, let not the LORD be angry, "and I will speak: Peradventure there "shall thirty be found there." And he said, "I will not do it, if I find thirty "there." 31. And he said, "Behold "now, I have taken upon me to speak "unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall "be twenty found there." And he said, "I will not destroy it for twenties sake." 32. And he said, "O let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this "once: Peradventure ten shall be found "there." And he said, "I will not destroy "it (d) for tens sake." 33. And the LORD went his way as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

CHAP. XIX.-to verse 30.

Haste "thee, escape thither, for I cannot do any "thing till thou be come thither :" therefore the name of the city was called (g) Zoar. 23. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. 24. Then the LORD rained upon Sodom, and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven. 25. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27. And Abraham gat up early in the morning, to the place where he stood before the LORD. 28. And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and towards all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. 29. And it came to pass when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered (b) Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. 30. And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar and he dwelt in a cave, he, and his two daughters.

CHAP. XXII.

(b) v. 29." Remember Abraham" in saving Lot. Lot was Abraham's nephew: the son of Haran, Abraham's brother. See Gen. xi. 27.

(i) v. 1. "Tempt," i. e. "try" "put his faith and obedience to the test." A singular trial: intended, probably, not merely to ascertain his submission and belief, but to intimate also that it was by the sacrifice of the promised seed that all the nations of the earth were to be blessed,

that God did (i) tempt Abraham, and said unto him," Abraham." And he said,

and to exhibit a type of the great Redeemer. God had promised Abraham, Gen. xii. 3. "In thee shall all families be blessed." And when Abraham, before Isaac's birth, expressed the wish to God, "Oh, that Ishmael" (his first born)" might live before thee, Gen. xvii. 18." God promised him a son by Sarah, ordered him to call his name Isaac, and added, "and I "will establish my covenant with him for an "everlasting covenant, and with his seed after "him, Gen. xvii. 19." Abraham might not be able to comprehend how this promise could be fulfilled, if he offered up Isaac, as he was commanded, and yet he hesitated not to comply with the command, and after Isaac's deliverance he might collect, or it might be revealed to

"Behold, here I am." 2. And he said, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, "whom thou lovest, and get thee into the "land of (k). Moriah; and offer him there "for a burnt-offering upon one of the "mountains which I will tell thee of." 3. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went (/) unto the place of which God had told him. 4. Then on the (m) third day Abraham lift up his eyes, and saw the (n) place afar off. 5. And Abraham said unto his young men, "Abide 66 you here with the ass; and I and the lad "will go yonder and worship, and come "again to you." 6. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon (0) Isaac his son, and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife: and they went both of them together. 7. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, "My father:" and he said, "Here am I, my son." And he said, "Behold the fire and the wood: "but where is the lamb for a burnt"offering?" And Abraham said, " My "son, (p) God will provide himself (q) a "lamb for a burnt offering:" so they went both of them together. 9. And they came

him, that the promised seed would be offered up to procure redemption for mankind. It was probably in allusion hereto, that our Saviour said to the Jews, John viii. 56. “ your father "Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw "it, and was glad." See 2 Hales, 138 to 144. (k) v.2. "Of Moriah." The mount Moriah, on which the Temple was afterwards built, was part of a hill, which included mount Sion, and mount Calvary.

(1) v. 3. "Unto," rather "towards." (m) v. 4. The third day." So that Abraham was under a trial of more than two days continuance.

(n) v. 3,4. "The place," supposed to be mount Calvary, where our Saviour was crucified. 2 Hales, 139.

(o) v. 6. "Upon Isaac." So that in this Isaac was the type of Jesus Christ: our Saviour carried the wood on which he was crucified. See John xix. 17. " and he (i. e. Jesus) bearing "his cross, went forth, &c."

() v. 8. "God will provide, &c." Dr. Wall considers this as a prophecy, referring to "the lamb of God," the Messiah, that full

(r) v. 14. "Jehovah-jireh." The Eng lish of which is "God will provide: these are the Hebrew words in verse 8. and was with reference to the words there used, to what is there stated that the place recent this name. Instead of " as it is said, &c." Dr. Hales reads, "according as he said on the mount," the Lord will provide," (assigning the reason why the name was given), 2 Hales, 140. The literal translation of the Hebrew (which is agreeable to Dr. Hales's rendering) seems to be," because he said that day o the mount, "the Lord will provide."

(s) v. 16. " Only son." He had another son, Ishmael," who was dwelling in the wilderness of Paran, Gen. xxi. 21. But Isaac was that son, with whom God had promised to establish his covenant, Gen. xvii. 21. See note
